The change in hydrodynamics by damming facilitates the terrestrial biological‑carbon-pump (BCP) effect and promotes the generation and burial of autochthonous organic carbon (OC). To constrain the burial fluxes of OC is crucial when assessing the role of inland waters in the global carbon cycle as OC originating mainly from weathering-derived dissolved inorganic carbon is overlooked in current global carbon budgeting. Here we examined the elemental and carbon isotopic compositions of the settling organic matter collected by sediment traps in three subtropical karst reservoirs (Hongfenghu, Pingzhai and Puding), SW China. The results show that 30- 60% of the settling OC in the studied reservoirs is autochthonous. The proportion of OC correlates inversely with OC's settling flux. Interestingly, Hongfenghu Reservoir, featured by the highest trophic state and POC concentration, has the highest fraction of OC but the lowest settling flux of OC among three reservoirs. The ballast effect of biogenic silica and lithogenic materials, rather than the aquatic primary productivity, is supposed to be the primary factor that governs the settling flux of OC in the studied reservoirs. Finally, it is estimated that the settling flux of OC in the three reservoirs is 47- 119 g C/m/yr while the burial flux of OC is 10- 26 g C/m/yr if assuming about 80% of OC is remineralized after sedimentation. This study demonstrates for the first time the role of biogenic silica and lithogenic materials' input in reservoir OC's settling which may be the further important due to the strengthening agricultural activity and the increasing fast-flow hydroelectric reservoirs.

Settling aggregates transport organic matter from the ocean surface to the deep sea and seafloor. Though plankton communities impact carbon export, how specific organisms and their interactions affect export efficiency is unknown. Looking at 15 years of eDNA sequences (18S-V4) from settling and sedimented organic matter in the Fram Strait, here we observe that most phylogenetic groups were transferred from pelagic to benthic ecosystems.

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) is increasingly used for monitoring disease targets in wastewaters around the world. This study, performed in Ottawa, Canada, identifies a decrease in SARS-CoV-2 wastewater measurements during snowmelt-induced sewer flushing events. Observations first revealed a correlation between suppressed viral measurements and periods of increased sewage flowrates, air temperatures above 0 °C during winter months, and solids mass flux increases.

For settling the recycling problem of waste polyurethane sponges (PU) and environment pollution of oil spills simultaneously, this work exploited the multifunctional superhydrophobic PU materials via the dip-coating method, which were prepared by anchoring modified FeO and expandable graphite (EG) on PU sponges under the adhesion effect of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The water contact angle and sliding angle of as-prepared PU sponges reached 154.1 ± 1.

Dust resuspension rates in four different landscapes in Kuwait were estimated over a 2-year period using Be and Cs radionuclides. The average rates of resuspension of particles labeled with Be (2 × 10 ± 3.9 × 10 s) were much higher than those of particles labeled with Cs (1.
