Introduction: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is mandatory in most European countries and evidence shows a move towards mandatory CPD across all Member States in the near future. Malta is one of seven Member States where dental CPD is still voluntary.

Discussion: Although dental CPD is a legal requirement for recertification in many countries, integral aspects of dental CPD remain under debate, like whether CPD is truly effective. This is because the methods with which CPD programmes are evaluated are not sufficiently robust to give concrete evidence to determine whether CPD will actually improve quality of care, treatment outcomes and safety for the public. Evaluating the effect of CPD programmes on the public is an extremely difficult task that would require an enormous amount of resources and logistics. The minimum requirements for the number of compulsory CPD hours imposed by regulatory bodies are not evidence-based but purely arbitrary, and the core topics selected for CPD programmes, although supported by research to some extent, may not reflect the public's and profession's needs. The Dental Association of Malta recognised need for further research on dental CPD and embarked on a 3-year Dental CPD Research Project. This project will be presented in a two-part series of articles. This first article is focused on the background of dental CPD in Europe. An understanding of the current issues with CPD and flaws in methods of evaluation formed the basis of the Malta CPD Pilot Project, which will be covered in the next paper.

SOX9 encodes an SRY-related transcription factor critical for chondrogenesis and sex determination among other processes. Loss-of-function variants cause campomelic dysplasia and Pierre Robin Sequence, while both gain- and loss-of-function variants cause disorders of sex development. SOX9 has also been linked to scoliosis and cancers, but variants are undetermined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate and improve structured postgraduate part-time programs in periodontology within the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), focusing on peri-implant diseases and the impact of recent classification schemes and guidelines.
  • A survey and systematic review were conducted to assess current educational programs and identify gaps in knowledge regarding prevention and management of peri-implant diseases among dental professionals.
  • The results revealed established programs in nine EFP countries and proposed a three-level framework (certificate, diploma, master) to enhance vocational education and harmonize training across nations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how consistently fourth- and fifth-year undergraduate students diagnose periodontitis using the 2018 Classification of Periodontal Diseases (CPD), hypothesizing no significant differences in their reliability.
  • Participants received training in a required course and assessed de-identified cases based on various patient documentation, with a significance threshold set for analysis.
  • Results showed varying accuracy rates for identifying the stage (28%-72% for fourth-year and 18.5%-77.8% for fifth-year students) and grade (40%-88% for fourth-year and 51.8%-92.5% for fifth-year) of periodontitis, with no significant difference noted between the two groups.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare how different intraocular lenses (EDoF vs. monofocal) affect visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
  • - 46 eyes from patients with controlled POAG were examined post-surgery to assess the impacts of perimetry parameters on visual capabilities, using various measurements such as corrected distance visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
  • - Results showed that EDoF IOLs were linked to better high spatial frequency contrast sensitivity compared to monofocal IOLs, highlighting differences in visual function based on the type of lens used.
