and are important human pathogens that frequently contain plasmids, both large and small, carrying antibiotic resistance genes. Large conjugative plasmids are known to mobilize small Col plasmids, but less is known about the specificity of mobilization. In the current study, six and four strains containing large plasmids were tested for their ability to mobilize three different kanamycin resistance Col plasmids (KanR plasmids). Large conjugative plasmids from five isolates, four and one , were able to mobilize KanR plasmids of various types. Plasmids capable of mobilizing the KanR plasmids were either IncI1 or IncX, while IncI1 and IncX plasmids with no evidence of conjugation had disrupted transfer regions. Conjugative plasmids of similar types mobilized similar KanR plasmids, but not all conjugative plasmid types were capable of mobilizing all of the KanR plasmids. These data describe some of the complexities and specificities of individual small plasmid mobilization.

Drug-resistant pathogens significantly threaten human health and life. Simply killing drug-resistant pathogens cannot effectively eliminate their threat since the drug-resistant genes (DRGs) released from dead drug-resistant pathogens are difficult to eliminate and can further spread via horizontal gene transfer, leading to the spread of drug resistance. The development of antibacterial materials with sterilization and DRGs cleavage activities is highly crucial.

ε-Poly-l-lysine (ε-PL), a natural food preservative with various advantages, is primarily produced by Streptomyces. It has attracted considerable attentions for the outstanding antibacterial activity, safety, heat stability, water solubility and other remarkable properties. In this study, a food-grade recombinant Bacillus subtilis was constructed for the biocatalysis of ε-PL.

Nanoparticles (NPs) hold great promise for agricultural applications, yet their potential impact on exogenous gene transfer within plant remains poorly understood. In this study, we utilized the non-conjugative plasmid pCAMBIA1300, harboring the bialaphos resistance (bar) gene expressed in plant and the kanamycin resistance (kanR) gene as selectable marker in bacteria. Our results revealed a significant increase in the transfer of plasmid (via carrier Escherichia coli DH5α), both intra- and inter-species within the endophyte, when Arabidopsis thaliana was exposed to environmentally relevant level of zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs at a concentration of 0.
