Brachytherapy can provide sufficient doses to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) with minimal damage to nearby normal tissues. In this study, the β-emitter Lu was conjugated to DTPA-polyethylene glycol (PEG) decorated gold nanostars (Lu-DTPA-pAuNS) used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering and photothermal therapy (PTT). The accumulation and therapeutic efficacy of Lu-DTPA-pAuNS were compared with those of Lu-DTPA on an orthotopic HNSCC tumor model. The SPECT/CT imaging and biodistribution studies showed that Lu-DTPA-pAuNS can be accumulated in the tumor up to 15 days, but Lu-DTPA could not be detected at 24 h after injection. The tumor viability and growth were suppressed by injected Lu-DTPA-pAuNS but not nonconjugated Lu-DTPA, as evaluated by bioluminescent imaging. The radiation-absorbed dose of the normal organ was the highest in the liver (0.33 mSv/MBq) estimated in a 73 kg adult, but that of tumorsphere (0.5 g) was 3.55 mGy/MBq, while intravenous injection of Lu-DTPA-pAuNS resulted in 1.97 mSv/MBq and 0.13 mGy/MBq for liver and tumorsphere, respectively. We also observed further enhancement of tumor-suppressive effects by a combination of Lu-DTPA-pAuNS and PTT compared to Lu-DTPA-pAuNS alone. In conclusion, Lu-DTPA-pAuNS may be considered as a potential radiopharmaceutical agent for HNSCC brachytherapy.

A dual-mode detection platform utilizing colorimetric and Raman was developed based on the exponential amplification reaction (EXPAR) strategy and a "core-satellite" structure constructed by bimetallic nanozymes to detect chloramphenicol (CAP). Initially, DNA-gated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating cascaded amplification were used to be nanocarriers for the colorimetric and Raman reporter molecules (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl; TMB). Subsequently, assembled DNA served as gatekeepers to create a stimulus-responsive DNA-gated MOF (TMB@DNA/MOF).

Cancer is one of the most fatal diseases threatening public health globally, and tumor metastasis causes greater than 90 % of cancer-associated deaths, presenting huge challenges for detection and efficient treatment of various human cancers. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a rare population of cancer cells and increasing evidences indicated CSCs are the driving force of tumor metastasis. In this study, a p-AuNSs-assisted single-cell Raman spectra has been established, to extract and amplify of CSCs fingerprints with single cell sensitivity.

A multifunctional microfluidic chip integrated with perfusion cell culture and in situ SERS detection of cell secretion was designed and developed for the detection of IL-6 secretion from LPS-stimulation of A549 cells in this paper. Researching works were focused on A549 cell activity and secretion in the constructed LPS-stimulated A549 cells model. On the designed microchip, a bubble trap chamber was designed to remove the bubbles in the culture medium which could also be simultaneously preheated by a split hot plate.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a method for treating cancer using the heat generated by light irradiation, often in combination with light-absorbing materials. Efficient PTT requires a drug delivery system to deliver light-absorbing materials to cancerous tissues. Gold nanostars (GNSs) enable efficient PTT through absorbing long-wavelength light.
