A known polyoxygenated briarane, briaexcavatolide P (), was isolated from a Formosan octocoral . Moreover, the same species , collected from Okinawan waters, yielded three chlorine-containing briaranes, including two new compounds, briastecholides B () and C () as well as a known analogue, briarenol R (). The structures of - were established using spectroscopic methods. In addition, briarane demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in lipo-polysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells by suppressing the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein.

The chemical screening of a cultured soft coral, , led to the isolation of eight natural, briarane-related diterpenoids, including three unreported metabolites, briavioids E-G (-), and five known briaranes, briacavatolides B () and C (), briaexcavatin L (), briaexcavatolide U () and briarenol K (). The structures of briaranes - were established using spectroscopic methods. The absolute configuration of briavioid A (), obtained in a previous study, was reported for the first time in this study by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis using a copper radiation source.

Two new briarane-related diterpenoids, designated as excavatoids E (1) and F (2), were isolated from the cultured octocoral Briareum excavatum. The structures of compounds 1 and 2 were established on the basis of extensive spectral data analysis. Briaranes 1 and 2 were found to exhibit moderate inhibitory effects on elastase release by human neutrophils.

Four new briarane-related diterpenoids, designated as briaexcavatins M-P (1-4), were isolated from the cultured octocoral Briareum excavatum. The structures, including the relative configurations of natural products 1-4 were established on the basis of extensive spectral data analysis and by comparison with the spectral data from other known metabolites featuring a briarane carbon skeleton.

A new trihydroxy briarane-related diterpenoid, junceellolide I (1), along with a known metabolite, (1R,2R,5Z,7R,8S,9R,10R,12R,14R,17S)-2,14-diacetoxy-8,17-epoxy-9,12-dihydroxybriara-5,11(20)-dien-19-one (2), have been isolated from the gorgonian coral Junceella fragilis, collected off the southern Taiwan coast. The structure, including the relative configuration of the new compound 1, was elucidated by the combination of spectral data, particularly in high-resolution 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy utilizing COSY, HMBC, HMQC, and NOESY experiments.
