Simple carbohydrates are associated with the enhanced risk of cardiovascular disease and adverse changes in lipoproteins in the organism. Conversely, sugars are known to exert a stabilizing effect on biological membranes, and this effect is widely exploited in medicine and industry for cryopreservation of tissues and materials. In view of elucidating molecular mechanisms involved in the interaction of mono- and disaccharides with biomimetic lipid systems, we study the alteration of dielectric properties, the degree of hydration, and the rotational order parameter and dipole potential of lipid bilayers in the presence of sugars. Frequency-dependent deformation of cell-size unilamellar lipid vesicles in alternating electric fields and fast Fourier transform electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are applied to measure the specific capacitance of phosphatidylcholine lipid bilayers in sucrose, glucose and fructose aqueous solutions. Alteration of membrane specific capacitance is reported in sucrose solutions, while preservation of membrane dielectric properties is established in the presence of glucose and fructose. We address the effect of sugars on the hydration and the rotational order parameter for 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl--glycero-3- phosphocholine (POPC) and 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl--glycero-3- phosphocholine (SOPC). An increased degree of lipid packing is reported in sucrose solutions. The obtained results provide evidence that some small carbohydrates are able to change membrane dielectric properties, structure, and order related to membrane homeostasis. The reported data are also relevant to future developments based on the response of lipid bilayers to external physical stimuli such as electric fields and temperature changes.

Bulk electrical impedance spectroscopy (bio-capacitance) probes, hold significant promise for real-time cell monitoring in bioprocesses. Focusing on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, we present a sensitivity analysis framework to assess the impact of cell and culture properties on the complex permittivity spectrum, ε, and its associated parameters, permittivity increment, Δε, critical frequency, f, and Cole-Cole parameter, α, measured by bio-capacitance probes. Our sensitivity analysis showed that Δε is highly sensitive to cell size and concentration, making it suitable for estimating biovolume during the exponential growth phase, whereas f provides information about cumulative changes in cell size, membrane permittivity, and cytoplasm conductivity during the transition to death phase.

Peptides, due to their diverse and controllable properties, are used as both liquid and gas phase recognition elements for both biological and chemical targets. While it is well understood how binding of a peptide to a biomolecule can be converted into a sensing event, there is not the same mechanistic level of understanding with regard to how peptides modulate the selectivity of semiconductor/conductor-based gas sensors. Notably, a rational, mechanistic study has not yet been performed to correlate peptide properties to the sensor response for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as a function of chemical properties.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn doped semiconductors such as monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), the optical properties are predominantly determined by exciton polarons, which are coherent superpositions of excitons and electron-hole excitation pairs in the Fermi sea. Here, we theoretically study the effect of exciton polarons on thermal radiation in doped two-dimensional semiconductors. By deriving an emissivity formula in terms of the dielectric function and the thickness of two-dimensional semiconductors, we show that the emissivity spectrum exhibits a narrow peak at the energy of an exciton polaron.
