Article Abstract

Atmospheric PM pollution has become a prominent environmental problem in China, posing considerable threat to sustainable development. The primary driver of PM pollution in China is urbanization, and its relationship with PM concentration has attracted considerable recent academic interest. However, the spatial heterogeneity of the effect of urbanization on PM concentration has not been fully explored. This study sought to fill this knowledge gap by focusing on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) urban agglomeration. Urbanization was decomposed into economic urbanization, population urbanization, and land urbanization, and four corresponding indicators were selected. A geographically weighted regression model revealed that the impact of multidimensional urbanization on PM concentration varies significantly. Economically, urbanization is correlated positively and negatively with PM concentration in northern and southern areas, respectively. Population size showed a positive correlation with PM concentration in northwestern and northeastern areas. A negative correlation was found between urban land size and PM concentration from central to southern regions. Urban compactness is the dominant influencing factor that is correlated positively with PM concentration in a major part of the BTH urban agglomeration. On the basis of these findings, BTH counties were categorized with regard to local policy recommendations intended to reduce PM concentrations.

Biomass burning is an important source of brown carbon (BrC) aerosols, which influence climate by affecting the Earth's radiative balance. However, the transformation pathways of BrC chromophores, especially in the presence of photochemically active species, such as nitrate, are not well understood. As one of the provinces with the largest number of national forest cities, all prefecture-level cities in Guangdong Province have joined the campaigns of building forest cities. Mastering the spatial and temporal variations of ecological environment quality (EEQ) in Guangdong Province is conducive to the benign interaction and coordinated development of urban construction and ecosystem. We used the water benefit-based ecological index (WBEI) to achieve rapid monitoring of EEQ in Guangdong Province, utilized the standard deviation ellipse and gravity center migration, Theil-Sen Median trend method and Mann-Kendall test to explore the spatial distribution disparities and trends, and analyzed the coupling coordination between EEQ and urbanization.
