The social amoeba provides an excellent model for research across a broad range of disciplines within biology. The organism diverged from the plant, yeast, fungi and animal kingdoms around 1 billion years ago but retains common aspects found in these kingdoms. has a low level of genetic complexity and provides a range of molecular, cellular, biochemical and developmental biology experimental techniques, enabling multidisciplinary studies to be carried out in a wide range of areas, leading to research breakthroughs. Numerous laboratories within the United Kingdom employ as their core research model. This review introduces and then highlights research from several leading British research laboratories, covering their distinct areas of research, the benefits of using the model, and the breakthroughs that have arisen due to the use of as a tractable model system.

The mammalian intestine is a highly organized and complex system essential for nutrient absorption, immune response, and homeostasis. Disruptions in its development can lead to various gut diseases, ranging from congenital anomalies to inflammatory and neoplastic disorders. Caenorhabditis elegans (C elegans) has emerged as a valuable model organism for studying intestinal development and gut diseases due to its genetic tractability and transparent body.

Symbiotic interactions drive species evolution, with nutritional symbioses playing vital roles across ecosystems. Chemosynthetic symbioses are globally distributed and ecologically significant, yet the lack of model systems has hindered research progress. The giant ciliate and its sulfur-oxidizing symbionts represent the only known chemosynthetic symbiosis with a short life span that has been transiently cultivated in the laboratory.

The cerebellum is a highly conserved brain compartment of vertebrates. Genetic diseases of the human cerebellum often lead to degeneration of the principal neuron, the Purkinje cell, resulting in locomotive deficits and socio-emotional impairments. Due to its relatively simple but highly conserved neuroanatomy and circuitry, these human diseases can be modeled well in vertebrates amenable for genetic manipulation.

The GC hexanucleotide repeat expansion in C9ORF72 is the major genetic cause of both amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) (C9-ALS/FTD). Despite considerable efforts, the development of mouse models of C9-ALS/FTD useful for therapeutic development has proven challenging due to the intricate interplay of genetic and molecular factors underlying this neurodegenerative disorder, in addition to species differences. This study presents a robust investigation of the cellular pathophysiology and behavioral outcomes in a previously described AAV mouse model of C9-ALS expressing 66 GC hexanucleotide repeats.

Meta-analyses have become increasingly common, providing meaningful summaries of cumulative knowledge in the dairy science literature. Some of the corresponding meta-analytic techniques have been developed by knowledgeable dairy scientists, some of which pre-date tractable likelihood-based random or mixed effects model meta-analytic techniques and associated software developed by statisticians. This review compares various meta-analytic techniques on aggregate data (i.
