Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films represent a milestone in the development of future technological breakthroughs. The processability of MOFs as films on surfaces together with their major features (i.e. tunable porosity, large internal surface area, and high crystallinity) is broadening their range of applications to areas such as gas sensing, microelectronics, photovoltaics, and membrane-based separation technologies. Despite the recent attention that MOF thin films have received, many challenges still need to be addressed for their manufacturing and integrability, especially when an industrial scale-up perspective is envisioned. In this brief review, we introduce several appealing approaches that have been developed in the last few years. First, a summary of liquid phase strategies that comprise microfluidic methods and supersaturation-driven crystallization processes is described. Then, gas phase approaches based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) are also presented.

Conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline, intrinsically porous materials that combine remarkable electrical conductivity with exceptional structural and chemical versatility. This rare combination makes these materials highly suitable for a wide range of energy-related applications. However, the electrical conductivity in MOF-based devices is often limited by the presence of different types of structural disorder.

Surface-anchored metal-organic frameworks (surMOFs) are crystalline, nanoporous, supramolecular materials mounted to substrates that have the potential for integration within device architectures relevant for a variety of electronic, photonic, sensing, and gas storage applications. This research investigates the thin film formation of the Cu-BDC (copper benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) MOF system on a carboxylic acid-terminated self-assembled monolayer by alternating deposition of solution-phase inorganic and organic precursors. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization demonstrate that crystalline Cu-BDC thin films are formed via Volmer-Weber growth.

This paper describes the first use of conductive metal-organic frameworks as the active material in the electrochemical detection of nitric oxide in aqueous solution. Four hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP)-based MOFs linked with first-row transition metal nodes (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) were compared as thin-film working electrodes for promoting oxidation of NO using voltammetric and amperometric techniques. Cu- and Ni-linked MOF analogs provided signal enhancement of 5- to 7-fold over a control glassy carbon electrode (SA = 6.

TiO has broad prospects in reducing the safety risks posed by emerging pollutants in water environments. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers limits the activity and photon utilization efficiency of TiO. In this study, mesoporous TiO (m-TiO) and ultra-thin g-CN nanosheets were composited using a hydrothermal method, with the m-TiO tightly and uniformly wrapped by g-CN.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) derived porous FeO/C powders were applied for absorption of microwaves in the frequency range of 1-18 GHz. The effects of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) additive on the synthesis of MIL101-(Fe) precursor were studied by various characterization methods. By adding PVP, the impure hematite phase (α-FeO) with magnetite phase (FeO) was disappeared and the particular morphology was transformed to the porous rod-like, leading to the increase of specific surface area from 150 to 282 m/g.
