Introduction: Congenital lymphopenias cause increased susceptibility to infections in children apparently healthy at birth. Earlier detection of these conditions would facilitate prompt treatment, prevent potentially serious disease complications and early deaths, and save healthcare resources.

Objective: To perform a pilot study for neonatal screening of congenital lymphopenias by the quantification of TREC and KREC –T- and B-cell receptor excision circles– in peripheral blood samples from newborns in Medellín, Colombia.

Background: Metastatic spine tumor surgery (MSTS) is often complex and extensive leading to significant blood loss. Allogeneic blood transfusion (ABT) is the mainstay of blood replenishment but with immune-mediated postoperative complications. Alternative blood management techniques (salvaged blood transfusion [SBT]) allow us to overcome such complications.

Diffraction imaging of cells allows rapid phenotyping by the response of intracellular molecules to coherent illumination. However, its ability to distinguish numerous types of human leukocytes remains to be investigated. Here, we show that accurate classification of three lymphocyte subtypes can be achieved with features extracted from cross-polarized diffraction image (p-DI) pairs.

Cigarette filter microplastics are composed of cellulose acetate that does not undergo biological or photo-degradation. These microplastics are readily dispersed and can be found abundantly in water, soil, and air. These fibers possess high absorption capabilities, allowing them to collect and retain pollutants such as toxic elements.

Clinical and immunological assays of white blood cells (WBCs) in human peripheral blood are of significance for disease diagnosis and immunological studies. However, separating WBCs from blood with high recovery and high purity remains challenging. In this study, by incorporating a pair of linearly tapered filter arrays, a crossflow filtration-based microfluidic chip was designed and fabricated for separation of WBCs from blood.
