Farm animals are frequently affected by a group of diseases with a rapid clinical course, caused by Clostridium spp. and immunization is essential to provide protection. However, the current manufacturing platform for these vaccines has disadvantages and the main alternative is the use of an expression system that uses Escherichia coli to obtain recombinant vaccine antigens. In this chapter we describe procedures for cloning, expression and characterization of recombinant toxins from Clostridium spp. produced in E. coli for veterinary vaccine applications.

(Homo)acetogens, including Clostridium spp., represent an enigma in metabolic flexibility and diversity. Eubacterium callanderi KIST612 is an acetogen that produces n-butyrate with carbon monoxide (CO) as the carbon and energy source; however, the production route is unknown.

Lymphoma is the most common neoplasia in the intestine of cats. According to ACVIM consensus statement, low-grade intestinal T-cell lymphoma (LGITCL) represents a monomorphic infiltration of the lamina propria or epithelium or both of cats with small, mature, neoplastic (clonal) T lymphocytes. Despite the importance as contributing factors of inheritance and environment in the pathogenesis of LGITCL, the chronic inflammatory status plays a fundamental role.

Background: Recent studies show that the increase in breath hydrogen (BH) and symptoms after ingestion of inulin are reduced by coadministering psyllium (PI).
Objectives: To determine if slowing delivery of inulin to the colon by administering it in divided doses would mimic the effect of PI. Primary endpoint was the BH area under the curve AUC.
