Background: Cardiovascular rehabilitation has been shown to improve morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiac illnesses; however, the referral rate for eligible patients at Tulane Medical Center has remained below best practice standards.

Methods: This is a single-center, quality-improvement study conducted from January 2020 through December 2020, with historical controls from 2019. Using Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle methodology, interventions were designed to improve referral rates for cardiac rehabilitation-eligible patients. Interventions included a presentation about the importance of cardiac rehabilitation and the current state of referrals, weekly reminders to residents and fellows on inpatient services with eligible patients, and an admission order set that included a default order for cardiac rehabilitation.

Results: The primary outcome was referral rate, which was measured by the total number of referrals compared with the total number of patients eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. In this quality-improvement study of 770 patients, there was a significant increase in the referral rate for cardiac rehabilitation-eligible patients. When comparing the referral rate in 2020-following institution of quality-improvement interventions-with that from 2019, there was an increase from 27% to 70%.

Conclusions: This quality-improvement study found that various interventions significantly increased the cardiac rehabilitation referral rate through a straightforward and simple strategy. Further efforts are underway to promote additional referral in order to meet or exceed the >90% best practice standard.

Background: Harmful care including the prescribing of high-risk and potentially inappropriate medications for older people is widespread among older adults, including people living with dementia (PLWD). Integrated Memory Care (IMC) is a comprehensive dementia care model where patients and their family caregivers access dementia-sensitive geriatric primary care.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of adult patients of IMC, Cognitive Neurology (CN), and Primary Care (PC) clinics aged 65 and older with a diagnosis of dementia in 2019-2021.

Background and objective Prostate cancer (PCA) is the most prevalent cancer among males. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends referral to PCA diagnostic pathway based on two criteria: (1) abnormal digital rectal examination (DRE) and (2) elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA). This study evaluates the diagnostic value of routine DRE in patients undergoing PCA assessment with pre-biopsy MRI.

Background/aims: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are effective in treating cancer. However, various immune-related adverse events (irAEs) have become prevalent, with ICI-induced colitis being the most common gastrointestinal irAE. Thus, we aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors of ICI-induced colitis in Korean patients with cancer.

Repeatability of RRate measurements in children during triage in two Ugandan hospitals.

PLOS Glob Public Health

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children globally. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) pneumonia diagnosis relies on accurate assessment of respiratory rate, which can be unreliable when completed by nurses with less-advanced training. To inform more accurate measurements, we investigate the repeatability of the RRate app used by nurses in Ugandan district hospitals.

Background: The diagnosis and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are crucial for tuberculosis (TB) control. Household contacts (HHC) of patients with pulmonary TB are at a high risk of LTBI due to their close proximity to source cases.

Objective: To describe the diagnosis and treatment of LTBI among HHC.
