Cosmid libraries constructed from environmental metagenome samples are powerful tools for capturing the genomic diversity of complex microbial communities. The large insert size (∼35 kb) of such libraries means they are compatible with downstream expression of large biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). This allows the discovery of previously undescribed natural products that would be inaccessible using traditional culture-based discovery pipelines. Here we describe methods for the construction of a cosmid metagenome library from a soil sample, and the process of screening that library for individual cosmid clones containing aromatic polyketide BGCs using degenerate primers that target the ketosynthase alpha (KSα) gene.

This study focused on developing biodegradable packaging films based on starch as an alternative to non-biodegradable such as petroleum-derived synthetic polymers. To improve its physicochemical properties, potato starch was chemically modified through phosphorylation. Starch phosphorylation was carried out using cyclic 1,3-propanediol phosphoryl chloride (CPPC), produced phosphorylated starch (PS), and analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

Thallium (Tl), recognized for its high toxicity, is subject to stringent international regulations regarding its permissible concentrations at ultra-trace levels. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO) was integrated with potassium (K)-rich biochar to create TiO/biochar (TiO/BC) composites for synergistic enhancement in ultra-trace Tl(I) removal, focusing on achieving concentration below the rigorous local threshold of 0.1 μg/L for drinking water.

A novel pH-responsive full-bio-based surfactant (Ca-S) containing a dynamic covalent bond is synthesized using renewable cashew phenol, 5-chloro-2-furanaldehyde, and taurine. The structure of Ca-S is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Limonene containing oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions are prepared on the basis of the Ca-S surfactant and are applied to the remediation of oil-contaminated soil under low-energy conditions at ambient temperature.

This article evaluates the prospects for rainwater harvesting (RWH) as a means of optimizing water management in the Mandara Mountains. RWH is a small-scale water conservation approach for locally intercepting and storing rainfall before it enters the usual hydrologic cycle. This ancient practice has recently sustained lives in semiarid areas of the world (e.

Soil heavy metal contamination and sludge disposal have become globally environmental issues problems of great concern. Utilizing sludge pyrolysis to produce biochar for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soil is an effective strategy to solve these two environmental problems. In this study, municipal sewage sludge and papermaking sludge were used as feedstock to prepare co-pyrolyzed biochar, which was then applied to reduce the toxicity of Cd in soil.
