Random lasers, which rely on random scattering events unlike traditional Fabry-Pérot cavities, are much simpler and cost-effective to fabricate. However, because of the chaotic fluctuations and instability of the lasing modes, controlling the lasing properties is challenging. In this study, we use random InP nanowire (NW) arrays that operate in the Anderson localization regime with stable modes as the random lasers. We show that by changing the design parameters of the NW arrays, such as filling factor, dimensions of the NWs, degree of randomness, and the size of the array, the properties of the lasing modes including the number of modes, lasing wavelengths, and lasing threshold can be controlled.

Visible light microlasers are essential building blocks for integrated photonics. However, achieving low-threshold (μW), continuous-wave (CW) visible light lasing at room temperature (RT) has been a challenge because of the formidable requirement of population inversion at short wavelengths. Rare-earth (RE)-activated microcavities, featuring high-quality factor (Q) and small mode volume of whispering gallery modes, offer a great opportunity for achieving infrared-to-visible upconversion (UC) lasing.

Double-layer interlaced anti-resonant elements were designed here to enhance the fundamental mode confinement capability of the large-mode-area Nd-doped fiber core. Moreover, a double-layer F-P etalon formed between the anti-resonant elements and the inner cladding was analyzed for the first time for fiber loss manipulation.

Two kinds of polarization-switching VCSEL arrays based on anti-parallel (AP) oriented liquid crystal (LC) external cavities and twisted nematic (TN) oriented LC external cavities are proposed in this paper. The light is independently guided by the LC electrically, achieving uniform lasing of linearly polarized light with mutually orthogonal polarization modes and equal power.

The corrugations partly suppress the high-order lateral modes of the lasers. The impact of the shape and size of rectangular and triangular types of corrugations on the lasing performance is compared for the first time, and an optimized design is presented.
