Infants show impressive speech decoding abilities and detect acoustic regularities that highlight the syntactic relations of a language, often coded non-adjacent dependencies (NADs, e.g., ). It has been claimed that infants learn NADs implicitly and associatively through passive listening and that there is a shift from effortless associative learning to a more controlled learning of NADs after the age of 2 years, potentially driven by the maturation of the prefrontal cortex. To investigate if older children are able to learn NADs, Lammertink et al. (2019) recently developed a word-monitoring serial reaction time (SRT) task and could show that 6-11-year-old children learned the NADs, as their reaction times (RTs) increased then they were presented with violated NADs. In the current study we adapted their experimental paradigm and tested NAD learning in a younger group of 52 children between the age of 4-8 years in a remote, web-based, game-like setting (). Children were exposed to Italian phrases containing NADs and had to monitor the occurrence of a target syllable, which was the second element of the NAD. After exposure, children did a "Stem Completion" task in which they were presented with the first element of the NAD and had to choose the second element of the NAD to complete the stimuli. Our findings show that, despite large variability in the data, children aged 4-8 years are sensitive to NADs; they show the expected differences in r RTs in the SRT task and could transfer the NAD-rule in the Stem Completion task. We discuss these results with respect to the development of NAD dependency learning in childhood and the practical impact and limitations of collecting these data in a web-based setting.

The pink-colored Cypridina luciferase (CypLase∗) from Cypridina (Vargula) hilgendorfii contains an unknown chromophore (CypL∗), derived from Cypridina luciferin (CypL). When CypLase∗ was treated with NAD(P)H-FMN flavin reductase (FRase) and NADH, the luminescence intensity in the reaction mixture increased significantly after gentle tapping. This observation suggests that CypL∗ in CypLase is enzymatically converted to CypL by the reduced flavin (FMNH) through the FRase reaction, and the resulting complex of CypL and CypLase reacts with O to emit light.

Modulation in cellular function and cell death through electrostimulation of intracellular organelles with the application of 50 ns pulsed electric field (nsPEF) have been investigated in breast cancerous MCF7 and normal MCF10A cells by developing a three-dimensional microelectrode device integrated with a fluorescence microscope. The findings revealed that nsPEF induced distinct effects on intracellular functions and dynamics in MCF7 and MCF10A cells. MCF10A cells exhibited significantly higher survivability than MCF7 cells, with different modes of cell death observed between them.

We report the application of organoiridium complexes as catalytic agents for the detoxification of biogenic reactive aldehyde species (RASP), which are implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. We show that Ir complexes functionalized with phosphonium cations localize selectively in the mitochondria and have better cellular retention compared to that of their parent Ir species. In a cell model for Parkinsonism, the mitochondria-targeted iridium catalysts exhibited superior cell protecting abilities and longer-lasting effects (up to 6 d) than conventional RASP scavengers, which failed to be effective beyond 24 h.
