Anemia is a frequent, yet increasingly recognized, comorbidity in diabetes mellitus (DM), with prevalence often driven by multifactorial mechanisms. Hematinic deficiencies, common in this population, may arise from associated comorbidities or medications, such as metformin, as well as other drugs commonly employed for DM-related conditions. Among contributing factors, diabetic kidney disease (DKD) plays a pivotal role, with anemia developing more frequently and being more pronounced in earlier stages, than in CKD of other causes.

Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a rare complication of erythropoietin (EPO) therapy, characterized by a severe deficiency in red blood cell production. There is no guideline on the treatment for PRCA because there have been too few cases to perform prospective cohort studies. The main treatments for PRCA include immediate cessation of EPO, restrictive transfusion, and immunosuppressive therapies.

In November 2020, a volunteer group reported an outbreak of an infectious disease with a high fatality rate and flu-like symptoms among stray cats in Aoshima, a remote island in Ehime, Japan. Nine adult cats with severe symptoms were hospitalized. Feline calicivirus (FCV) was isolated from pharyngeal swabs of six hospitalized cats.
