[Complications of the dilatation of Stensen's duct: stenosis and lithiasis].

Published: January 1988

A recent publication noted the apparent lack of serious complications of dilatation of salivary canals, based on a review of 16 cases. This is contested by the report of three cases of dilatation of Stensen's duct complicated by lithiasis and stenosis, with associated canalar pseudo-cysts. Surgical excision was required and allowed study of histopathology of this affection.

A case of sialodochitis fibrinosa with MR findings leading to selection of an appropriate treatment.

Radiol Case Rep

October 2024

Department of Medical Examination and Testing, Tokyo Dental College Ichikawa General College, 5-1-13, Sugano, Ichikawa-shi, Chiba 272-0824, Japan.

Sialodochitis fibrinosa is a rare disease characterized by paroxysmal swelling of the salivary glands and discharge of fibrous masses containing eosinophils from the salivary gland orifice. Diagnosis was traditionally based on irregular dilation of the main salivary duct by sialography, but now includes the imaging findings of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the present patient, short TI inversion recovery (STIR) MRI sequence was able to identify Stensen's duct dilation and additionally depict cystic dilation due to stenosis of the orifice and multiple cystic dilations within the parotid gland body.

Partial facial paralysis induced by sialolithiasis of the parotid gland: a case report.

BMC Neurol

March 2024

Cedars Sinai, Department of Neurology, 8700 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90048, USA.

Background: Facial paralysis due to parotid sialolithiasis-induced parotitis is a unusual clinical phenomenon that has not been reported in prior literature. This scenario can present a diagnostic challenge due to its rarity and complex symptomatology, particularly if a patient has other potential contributing factors such as facial trauma or bilateral forehead botox injections as in this patient. This case report elucidates such a complex presentation, aiming to increase awareness and promote timely recognition among clinicians.

Genome-wide association analysis in dilated cardiomyopathy reveals two new players in systolic heart failure on chromosomes 3p25.1 and 22q11.23.

Eur Heart J

May 2021

Sorbonne Université, INSERM, UMR-S1166, Research Unit on Cardiovascular Disorders, Metabolism and Nutrition, Team Genomics & Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Diseases, Paris 75013, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the genetic factors contributing to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a significant cause of heart failure.
  • Researchers conducted a large genome-wide association study, identifying two new genetic loci associated with DCM and confirming previous ones, suggesting a strong link between certain genetic variations and increased risk of the disease.
  • The findings highlight potential candidate genes, SLC6A6 and SMARCB1, which may be involved in the dysfunction of heart muscle, offering insights into new biological pathways related to heart failure.
