The excitation of nitromethane (CH NO ), which is an important propellant and prototypic molecule for large class of explosives, has been investigated by electron impact and subsequent emission of photons in the UV-VIS spectral region between 300 nm and 670 nm. Emission spectrum of nitromethane was recorded at an electron energy of 50 eV. New dissociative excitation channels were observed through the appearance of different CH, CN, NH, OH and NO bands, and the Balmer series of atomic hydrogen. In addition, relative emission cross sections were recorded for the transitions of selected fragments. The emission spectrum was captured with significantly higher resolution in comparison to previous studies.

Size Inhomogeneity Facilitates Exciton Dissociation in Carbon Dots.

Nano Lett

Organic carbon dots (CDs) exhibit tunable electronic structures and exceptional optical properties, supporting both exciton- and charge-driven applications. However, the mechanisms underlying this dual functionality are poorly understood. This study establishes the role of size inhomogeneity in exciton dissociation for the first time.

With the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer worldwide and the increasing demand for surgery, the risk of parathyroid injury is also increasing, which will lead to postoperative hypoparathyroidism (HP) and hypocalcemia. In order to improve the quality of life of patients after surgery, there is an urgent need to develop a novel platform that can identify the parathyroid gland immediately during surgery. The parathyroid gland promotes the increase of blood calcium concentration by secreting parathyroid hormone (PTH).

Article Synopsis
  • PFAS are toxic pollutants that are tough to break down due to strong chemical bonds.
  • Researchers found a method using PTFE, a harmless material, as a piezocatalyst to degrade PFAS effectively.
  • This technique achieved a 93.4% degradation of PFOA and works on other PFAS compounds, offering a promising solution for cleaning contaminated water.

Energetic and Electronic Properties of AcX and LaX (X = O and F).

J Phys Chem A

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35487-0336, United States.

The bonding and spectroscopic properties of LaX and AcX (X = O and F) diatomic molecules were studied by high-level ab initio CCSD(T) and SO-CASPT2 electronic structure calculations. Bond dissociation energies (BDEs) were calculated at the Feller-Peterson-Dixon (FPD) level. Potential energy curves and spectroscopic constants for the lowest-lying spin-orbit Ω states were obtained at the SO-CASPT2/aQ-DK level.

Resonances in Low-Energy Electron Collisions with Salicylic Acid.

J Phys Chem A

Departamento de Física, Universidade Federal do Paraná, Caixa Postal 19044, 81531-980 Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

In this work, we report elastic integral, differential, and momentum-transfer cross sections for the scattering of low-energy electrons by salicylic acid. The cross sections were calculated with the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with norm-conserving pseudopotential within the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization (SEP) approximations for energies up to 15 eV. In the SEP approximation, four π* resonances were found at around 0.
