Prenyl groups increase the lipophilicity of flavonoids, endowing them with a special activity, selectivity, and pharmacological properties by prenylation. Herein, a novel prenyltransferase () gene from sp. NT11 was expressed in , and its biochemical characteristics were determined. ShFPT exhibited high selectivity to prenylate naringenin at C-6 to generate 6-prenylnaringenin. The optimal activity was observed at pH 6.0 and 55 °C. The and for naringenin were 0.0095 s and 0.20 mM, respectively. Several promiscuous kinase and isopentenyl phosphate kinase genes were screened to develop the most efficient dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) synthesis pathway for 6-prenylnaringenin synthesis in . The 6-prenylnaringenin production was improved by changing the induction strategies and optimizing the bioconversion conditions. Finally, 6-prenylnaringenin production reached the highest yield of 69.9 mg/L with average productivity of 4.0 mg/L/h after 16 h incubation, which is the highest yield for any prenylated flavonoid reported to date in . Therefore, this study provides an efficient method for 6-prenylnaringenin production and reveals the DMAPP synthesis pathway.

Natural products from plants exert a promising potential to act as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic agents. Xanthohumol, a natural compound from hops, is indeed known for its anticarcinogenic properties. Xanthohumol is converted into three metabolites: isoxanthohumol (non-enzymatically) as well as 8- and 6-prenylnaringenin (enzymatically).

The importance of hops (the flowers of ) as food and an herbal remedy is reflected by a large number of analytical methods published. However, supercritical fluid chromatography, a highly efficient, rapid, and "green" separation technique, has not been considered for hops samples so far. This prompted us to establish the first supercritical fluid chromatography-based protocol for the separation, identification, and quantitation of five prenylated constituents of hops.

Beer, the most popular beverage containing hops, is also frequently consumed by cancer patients. Moreover, non-alcoholic beer, owing to its nutritional value and high content of biological active compounds, is sometimes recommended to patients by oncologists. However, the potential benefits and negatives have to date not been sufficiently evaluated.
