Unlabelled: Drugs that inhibit voltage-dependent sodium channels are commonly used to treat epilepsy. Old and novel antiepileptic drugs are used either as monotherapy or in combination to control epilepsy. For a long time, carbamazepine has been used as the first choice for the treatment of simple and complex partial seizures. In the USA, lacosamide was approved in October 2008 as an adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures. We describe the effect of two sodium channel blockers on the heart of a patient with epilepsy.
Learning Points: Approximately 30% of patients with epilepsy require combination therapy with antiepileptic drugs for seizure reduction.Lacosamide and carbamazepine are both sodium channel blockers but exert their effects through different mechanisms.Electrocardiogram monitoring is necessary when lacosamide and carbamazepine are used together as this combination may predispose to seizures, conduction abnormalities and dysrhythmia.

Background: Mounting evidence underline the relevance of macromolecular complexes in cancer. Integrins frequently recruit ion channels and transporters within complexes which behave as signaling hubs. A complex composed by β1 integrin, hERG1 K channel, the neonatal form of the Na channel Na 1.

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain poses significant clinical challenges and severely impacts patient quality of life. Sodium ion channels are crucial in regulating neuronal excitability and pain. Our research indicates that the microRNA-30b (miR-30b) in rat dorsal root ganglia (DRG) contributes to chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain by regulating the Nav1.

Burn-related neuropathic pain (BRNP) can arise following burn-induced nerve damage, affects approximately 6% of burned human patients and can result in chronic pain. Although widely studied in humans, data on BRNP or its treatment in animals is lacking. A 4-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with an infected, non-healing wound suspected to be a caustic burn.

Refractive index (RI) and temperature (T) are both critical environmental parameters for environmental monitoring, food production, and medical testing. The paper develops a D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor to measure RI and T simultaneously. Its cross-sectional structure encompasses a hexagonal-hole lattice, with one hole selectively filled with toluene for temperature sensing.

Several mutations of the uppermost arginine, R219, in the voltage-sensing sliding helix S4 of cardiac sodium channel Nav1.5 are reported in the ClinVar databases, but the clinical significance of the respective variants is unknown (VUSs). AlphaFold 3 models predicted a significant downshift of S4 in the R219C VUS.
