Thanks to a bottom-up design of metals and organic ligands, the library of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has seen a conspicuous growth. Post-synthetically modified MOFs comprise a relatively smaller subset of this library. Whereas the approach of post-synthetic modification was seminally introduced for MOFs in the early 1990s, the earliest examples of post-synthetically modified MOFs are only congruous with adsorption and catalysis. The utility of PSM-derived MOFs for the sensing and capture of water contaminants is relatively niche. Arguably though, an increasing number of post-synthetically modified MOFs are finding relevance in the context of water pollutant remediation. In this article, we review the recent advances in this area and propose a structure-function relationship-guided blueprint for the future outlook.

Capture of CO from the air offers a promising approach to addressing climate change and achieving carbon neutrality goals. However, the development of a durable material with high capacity, fast kinetics and low regeneration temperature for CO capture, especially from the intricate and dynamic atmosphere, is still lacking. Here a porous, crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) with olefin linkages has been synthesized, structurally characterized and post-synthetically modified by the covalent attachment of amine initiators for producing polyamines within the pores.

Adsorbents for hydrogen-bond accepting hazardous chemicals by post-synthetic modification of UiO-66-NH.

Dalton Trans

Materials and Sensors Section, US Naval Research Laboratory, 4555 Overlook Ave SW, Washington, DC 20375, USA.

Adsorbents for hydrogen-bond accepting chemicals such as organophosphates are developed by post-synthetically modifying UiO-66-NH through two analogous condensation reactions to incorporate hydrogen-bond donating adsorbent groups. When benzaldehydes are employed as coupling partners, the resulting imine-functionalized MOFs show improvements in uptake capacity with increasingly electron-deficient adsorbent groups. By contrast, when the coupling partners are benzoic acids, the resulting amide-functionalized MOFs exhibit improvements in uptake capacity with increasingly electron-rich adsorbent groups.

Novel nitrogen-doped carbon-coated SnSe based on a post-synthetically modified MOF as a high-performance anode material for LIBs and SIBs.

Nanoscale

August 2024

Centre for Clean Energy Technology, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney, Broadway, Sydney, NSW, 2007, Australia.

SnSe with high theoretical capacity has been identified as an emerging anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the rate performance and cycling performance of this material in practical applications are still limited by unavoidable volume expansion and low conductivity. In this work, we designed and synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon-coated SnSe/C-N composites using 2-aminoterephthalic acid (CHNO) as a nitrogen-containing compound for modification by hydrothermal and vacuum calcination methods to achieve efficient utilization of active sites and optimization of the electronic structure.

The synthesis and scale-up of high quality covalent organic frameworks (COFs) remains a challenge due to slow kinetics of the reversible bond formation and the need for precise control of reaction conditions. Here we report the rapid synthesis of faceted single crystals of two-dimensional (2D) COFs using a continuous flow reaction process. Two imine linked materials were polymerized to the hexagonal CF-TAPB-DMPDA and the rhombic CF-TAPPy-PDA COF, respectively.

Uptake of Ethyl Xanthate to Metal Organic Frameworks.

ACS Omega

September 2023

Department of Chemistry, University of Jyvaskyla, P.O. Box 35, Jyvaskyla 40014, Finland.

As the mining industry spreads to new areas in the arctic regions, the need for re-useable efficient methods for mine chemicals' recycling increases. Especially in the case of xanthates, which are used as collectors for many metals from ore. Xanthates are very toxic to aquatic life either directly or indirectly and cause potentially severe health problems to humans after long-term exposure.
