It is well known that lithium reacts violently with water under the release of molecular hydrogen and the formation of lithium hydroxide. In this work, the initial mechanisms for the surface reactions of metallic lithium with water from the gas phase were investigated by means of periodic density functional theory calculations. For this purpose, adsorption/absorption structures and diffusion and dissociation processes of hydrogen, OH, and H O on low-index metallic lithium surfaces were investigated. Through thermodynamic and kinetic considerations, negatively charged centers on the surface were identified as the origin of hydrogen formation. The strikingly low reaction barriers for the reaction at these centers implied a self-supporting effect of hydrogen evolution and the associated lithium degradation.

Eccentric contraction- (ECC) induced force loss is a hallmark of murine dystrophin-deficient (mdx) skeletal muscle that is used to assess efficacy of potential therapies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. While virtually all key proteins involved in muscle contraction have been implicated in ECC force loss, a unifying mechanism that orchestrates force loss across such diverse molecular targets has not been identified. We showed that correcting defective hydrogen sulfide (H2S) signaling in mdx muscle prevented ECC force loss.

Application of algicides produced by naturally occurring bacteria is considered an environmentally friendly approach to control harmful algal blooms. However, few studies assess the effects of bacterial algicides on non-target species, either independently or with other stressors. Here, we measured sub-lethal effects of dinoflagellate-specific algicide IRI-160AA on the estuarine fish Fundulus heteroclitus and Menidia menidia in laboratory experiments.

Context: A chemical reaction can be described, from a physicochemical perspective, as a redistribution of electron density. Additionally, non-covalent interactions locally modify the electron density distribution. This study aims to characterize the modification of reactivity caused by the presence of non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds, in a reaction involving the formation of two bonds and the breaking of two others: CH₃COOH + NH₂CH₃ → CH₃CONHCH₃.

Disproportion between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the body's antioxidant system can cause oxidative stress, which is considered a common denominator in various pathological conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, aging, and cognitive disorders. The generation of free radicals, which occurs through partial reduction of oxygen, can quickly overwhelm the endogenous antioxidant system capacity of the cell. This causes lipid, protein, DNA and RNA damage, inflammation, and overall cell degeneration, which can be mitigated by various antioxidants.

Coacervation based on liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) has been widely used for the preparation of artificial protocells and to mimic the dynamic organization of membrane-free organelles. Most complex synthetic coacervates are formed through electrostatic interactions but cannot withstand high ionic strength conditions (>0.1 M).
