A novel non-C-symmetric -benzimidazolium salt derived from (±)-valinol has been prepared by a simple and straightforward process in good yield. The structure of -benzimidazolium salt provided a bulky steric group on the ethylene bridge; which facilitates the catalytic efficacy in the C()-C() formation. Its catalytic activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of unactivated aryl chlorides has been found to have high efficacy in 1 mol% Pd loading. This protocol demonstrated the potential on the synthesis of sterically hindered biaryls.

Background: Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) are a new class of organic-inorganic hybrid materials with high surface area, narrow pore size distribution, high functional group loading, and tunable functional groups. In contrast to other porous organosilicate materials, PMOs show a uniform distribution of organic groups inside their framework walls. They are synthesized by condensing bis-silylated organic precursors around a surfactant template.

The asymmetric unit of the title salt, CHN ·CHOS, comprises two 1,3-di-hydro-2-benzimidazol-2-iminium cations and two 2-hy-droxy-5-sulfobenzoate anions (' = 2). In the crystal, the mol-ecules inter-act through N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C-O⋯π contacts. The hydrogen-bonding inter-actions lead to the formation of layers parallel to (01).

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involves creating a fluorescent chemosensor (KG3) that effectively detects nitrate ions in water, confirmed through various scientific methods with a very low detection limit of 0.032 μM.
  • * KG3 is enhanced with iron oxide nanoparticles and silica to form a nanocomposite that efficiently removes 96% of nitrate ions from groundwater and can also detect nitrate ions using a mobile-based fluorescence sensing prototype.
