Double and triple bonds have significant effects on the biological activities of lipids. Determining multiple bond positions in their molecules by mass spectrometry usually requires chemical derivatization. This work presents an HPLC/MS method for pinpointing the double and triple bonds in fatty acids. Fatty acid methyl esters were separated by reversed-phase HPLC with an acetonitrile mobile phase. In the APCI source, acetonitrile formed reactive species, which added to double and triple bonds to form [M + CHN] ions. Their collisional activation in an ion trap provided fragments helpful in localizing the multiple bond positions. This approach was applied to fatty acids with isolated, cumulated, and conjugated double bonds and triple bonds. The fatty acids were isolated from the fat body of early-nesting bumblebee and seeds or seed oils of , , and . Using the method, the presence of the known fatty acids was confirmed, and new ones were discovered.

This study investigated the effects of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii polysaccharides (CRPs) on retarding the retrogradation of japonica rice starch (JS) and glutinous rice starch (GS). Structure characterization revealed that CRPs, with an average molecular weight of 505 kDa, mainly consisted of glucose, mannose, and galactose and featured a triple-helix structure. CRPs could reduce the storage modulus increment of JS during the cooling process by interacting with amylose, thereby inhibiting gel network formation.

The study of structure-activity relationships is a top priority in the development of nontraditional luminescent materials. In this work, nonconjugated polyurethanes (PUs) with full-color emission (red, green, and blue) are easily obtained by control of the diol monomer structure and the polymerization conditions. Selected diol monomers introduced single, double, or triple bond repeating units into the main chain of the PUs, in order to understand how unsaturated bonds and H-bonds affect their luminescence from a molecular orbital viewpoint.

Chemical Bonding and Dynamic Structural Fluxionality of a Boron-Based BAl Cluster.

Molecules

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Lyuliang University, Lishi 033001, China.

We studied the boron-based composite cluster BAl doped with Al atoms. The global minimum structure of the BAl cluster is a three-layer structure, consisting of three parts: an Al unit, a B ring and an isolated Al atom. Charge calculations analysis shows that the cluster can be expressed as [Al][B][Al], has 6π/6σ double aromaticity and follows the (4+2) Hückel rule.

Investigation on the Coordination Bonding Nature of Actinide-Doped Endohedral Borospherenes An@B (An = U, Np, Pu, Am, Cm).

Molecules

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Molecular Engineering of Education Ministry, Institute of Molecular Science, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China.

Endohedral metallo-borospherenes M@B have received considerable attention since the discovery of B in 2014. However, the coordination bonding nature of most of actinide-doped endohedral An@B still remains in dispute or unexplored. Extensive and systematic first-principles theory calculations performed herein unveil the ground states of triplet U@B (, , A), quartet U@B (, , B), quintet Np@B (, , A), sextet Np@B (, , A), septet Pu@B (, , A), octet Am@B (, , A), and octet Cm@B (, , A) at the coupled-cluster with triple excitations CCSD(T) level.

This study aimed to investigate the structural characteristics of Stichopus horrens collagen (SHC), Holothuria scabra collagen (HSC), and Holothuria leucospilota collagen (HLC) and to assess the effect of transglutaminase (TGase) on their film-forming properties. The results indicated that the collagens from three species of sea cucumbers were type I collagen with a complete triple helical structure. The thermal denaturation temperature of HLC (34.
