The determination of pH values is essential in many chemical, medical, and environmental monitoring processes, which has been relying on conventional pH meters (glass electrodes) for quantitation and pH test strips for qualitative (or semi-quantitative) assessment. In this work, we demonstrate a smartphone-based pH determination technique, which performs digital image analysis of commercial test strips, particularly the determination of either the dominant wavelength (λ) or complementary wavelength (λ) of the color image. In conjunction with a 3D-printed optical accessory (with a surface light source and a macro lens), the quality of captured images have been warranted, and the quantitation accuracy of 0.05 pH units has been achieved. More importantly, the performance of this smartphone-based pH reading system (namely "Smart-pH-Reader") was validated using multiple real-world samples, as the results are consistent with those determined with a standard pH meter. The Smart-pH-Reader is envisioned to be a simple, portable, and accurate tool for pH determination in the fields of environmental monitoring, medical diagnosis, and beyond.

Chemotherapy is a crucial cancer treatment, but its effectiveness requires precise monitoring of drug concentrations in patients. This study introduces an innovative electrochemical strip sensor design to detect and continuously monitor methotrexate (MTX), a key chemotherapeutic drug. The sensor is crafted through an eco-friendly synthesis process that produces porous reduced graphene oxide (PrGO), which is then integrated with gold nanocomposites and polypyrrole (PPy) to boost the performance of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE).

Electropositive Magnetic Fluorescent Nanoprobe-Mediated Immunochromatographic Assay for the Ultrasensitive and Simultaneous Detection of Bacteria.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510000, China.

Immunochromatographic assays (ICAs) provide simple and rapid strategies for bacterial diagnosis but still suffer from the problems of low sensitivity and high dependency on paired antibodies. Herein, the broad-spectrum capture and detection capability of the antibody-free electropositive nanoprobe are clarified for bacteria for the first time and an ultrasensitive fluorescent ICA platform is constructed for the simultaneous diagnosis of multiple pathogens. A magnetic multilayer quantum dot nanocomposite with an amino-embedded SiO shell (MagMQD@Si) is designed to enrich bacteria from solutions effectively, offer high luminescence, and reduce background signals on test strips, thus greatly improving the sensitivity and stability of ICA technique for pathogen.

Dye-sensitized upconversion nanoprobes with ultra-high signal-to-background ratio for visual and sensitive detection of nerve agent mimics.

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Micro & Nano Materials Interface Science, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Central South University, Changsha, 410083, China.

An exciting upconversion nanoprobe conditioning strategy is proposed to improve the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) through a dye-sensitized strategy, in which the dye functions both as a recognition unit of the detection target and as a sensitizer to amplify the visible luminescence of the lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), instead of a quencher. The application of this dye-sensitized upconversion nanoprobe to the visual detection of nerve agent mimics diethoxy phosphatidylcholine (DCP) showed excellent detection performance, with up to 110-fold enhancement of the luminescence response of the probe in DCP solution and a detection limit as low as 2 nM. Finally, we performed visual detection of DCP solution and vapor by using test strips containing the probe.

Recently, the scale and frequency of harmful algae blooms (HABs) have gradually increased, posing a serious threat to human health, marine ecosystems and economic development. For early warning, a method is required that can quickly detect and monitor microalgae. It is proposed to use aptamer targeted to Prorocentrum minimum, along with exonuclease III (Exo III), gold nanoparticles, target single-stranded DNA and hairpin structure probe to construct a new method, i.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the influence of different tunnel reinforcement measures on drivers and to evaluate the associated driving safety risks.

Methods: Experimental data of driving behavior and physiological response were collected under different driving simulation scenarios, such as cover arch erection, corrugated steel, grouting, Steel strips, and fire; an evaluation index system was established based on electrocardiographic (ECG), electrodermal activity(EDA), standard deviation of speed (SDSP), Steering Entropy(SE), standard deviation of lateral position (SDLP) and other indices. The classical domain rank standard of each evaluation index was divided using K-Means algorithm, and a synthetic evaluation matter-element model was established to comprehensively evaluate and analyze the safety risks of each scenario.
