Compared with systemic treatment alone, whether surgical treatment combined with systemic treatment can improve survival outcomes of patients with isolated breast cancer liver metastases (BCLM) is still controversial. This meta-analysis was designed to evaluate the efficacy of surgical treatment for patients with isolated BCLM. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library up to May 13, 2021 was conducted for relevant studies. The primary outcome was overall survival. The meta-analysis was performed using R software. The quality of the pooled study was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The publication bias was evaluated by funnel plots and Begg's and Egger's tests. Fixed- and random-effects models were applied according to heterogeneity. 9 retrospective studies involving 13 cohorts (7 unmatched cohorts and 6 matched cohorts) were included in this study. The surgical cohorts had better overall survival than the systemic cohorts in the pooled analysis of all the included studies, in the subgroup analysis of liver resection, and in the subset of the matched cohorts. Compared with systemic treatment alone, surgical treatment combined with systemic treatment was proven to be associated with superior survival outcomes, which should be considered in selected patients with isolated BCLM.

Mupirocin is an effective antibiotic for infectious skin diseases. However, mupirocin is formulated as an ointment and is difficult to apply in canine systemic pyoderma. Therefore, many clinicians reformulate mupirocin off-label ointment into a spray.

This review explores the intricate relationship between glaucoma and circadian rhythm disturbances. As a principal organ for photic signal reception and transduction, the eye plays a pivotal role in coordinating the body's circadian rhythms through specialized retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), particularly intrinsically photosensitive RGCs (ipRGCs). These cells are critical in transmitting light signals to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the central circadian clock that synchronizes physiological processes to the 24-hour light-dark cycle.

Prognostic and Predictive Biomarkers of Oligometastatic NSCLC: New Insights and Clinical Applications.

JTO Clin Res Rep

December 2024

Department of Pulmonary Diseases, GROW Research Institute for Oncology and Reproduction, Maastricht University Medical Center+, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

This review discusses the current data on predictive and prognostic biomarkers in oligometastatic NSCLC and discusses whether biomarkers identified in other stages and widespread metastatic disease can be extrapolated to the oligometastatic disease (OMD) setting. Research is underway to explore the prognostic and predictive value of biological attributes of tumor tissue, circulating cells, the tumor microenvironment, and imaging findings as biomarkers of oligometastatic NSCLC. Biomarkers that help define true OMD and predict outcomes are needed for patient selection for oligometastatic treatment, and to avoid futile treatments in patients that will not benefit from locoregional treatment.

This study reports a rare case of immune-complex mediated mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (ICGN) with a full-house pattern in a 56-year-old Japanese man, observed during the treatment of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Because of persistent complement deficiency and worsening of kidney function, he was treated with prednisolone, and his urinary findings improved markedly. However, as the complement titers were still low, mycophenolate mofetil was also prescribed, which normalized complement levels.

Vitiligo is a skin disease that affects all ethnicities and genders and is characterized by the loss of pigment essentially due to the selective loss of melanocytes. Although it is generally considered a systemic disease associated with polymorphisms in genes involved in the immune response, vitiligo is also considered an oxidative imbalance-associated disease. It represents a multifactorial pathology in which some genetic predisposition and epigenetic factors coupled with some critical biochemical and molecular pathways could play a pivotal role.
