Background: Recent evidence suggests that 1 dose of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine may have similar effectiveness in reducing HPV infection risk compared to 2 or 3 doses.

Objective: To evaluate the public health impact and cost-effectiveness of implementing a 1-dose or a 2-dose program of the 9-valent HPV vaccine in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC).

Methods: We adapted a dynamic transmission model to the Indonesia setting, and conducted a probabilistic sensitivity analysis using distributions reflecting the uncertainty in levels and durability of protection of a 1-dose that were estimated under a Bayesian framework incorporating 3-year vaccine efficacy data from the KEN SHE trial (base-case) and 10 year effectiveness data from the India IARC study (alternative analysis).

Key characteristics of carcinogens meet hallmarks for prevention-cutting the Gordian knot.

Agency for Prevention, Environment and Energy, Emilia-Romagna (Arpae), Bologna, Italy.

The complexity of cancer requires a comprehensive approach to understand its diverse manifestations and underlying mechanisms. Initially outlined by Hanahan and Weinberg in 2000 and updated in 2010, the hallmarks of cancer provide a conceptual basis for understanding inherent variability in cancer biology. Recent expansions have further elucidated additional hallmarks, including phenotypic plasticity and senescent cells.

Toward a Framework to Assess the Financial and Economic Burden of Cervical Cancer in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review.

JCO Glob Oncol

August 2024

International Agency for Research on Cancer, (IARC/WHO), Early Detection, Prevention and Infections Branch, Lyon, France.

Purpose: To review the economic burden assessment of cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and use the findings to develop a pragmatic, standardized framework for such assessment.

Methods: We first systematically reviewed articles indexed in scientific databases reporting the methodology for collecting and calculating costs related to the cervical cancer burden in LMICs. Data on study design, costing approach, cost perspective, costing period, and cost type (direct medical costs [DMC], direct nonmedical costs [DNMC], and indirect costs [IC]) were extracted.

Article Synopsis
  • - Arsenic, existing in forms like arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)), poses serious health risks, classified as carcinogenic by IARC, and is a major concern for WHO due to widespread contamination affecting millions globally.
  • - Chronic arsenic exposure can lead to severe health issues, including skin lesions, lung and liver diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, highlighting the urgent need for effective detection methods.
  • - The review focuses on colorimetric detection techniques for arsenic in water, discussing recent advancements and challenges, emphasizing the importance of improving sensitivity, selectivity, and affordability, particularly through the use of nanomaterials.
