A series of europium and gadolinium complexes comprising a β-diketone moiety modified with a fluorinated side-group and thiophene ring have been designed and synthesized and a comparative study of their luminescence properties has been carried out. In this study, when the methyl side group was modified by sequential addition of fluorine substituents and then the perfluorinated carbon chain was extended up to -CF by adding CF fragments, it transpired that the non-radiative energy processes are significantly suppressed in structurally more rigid polyfluorinated β-diketonate compounds of the series as C-H oscillators are replaced with low-energy C-F oscillators. The impact of other electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents on the spectroscopic and photophysical properties of the complexes in the present study has also been observed. Despite the presence of low-lying ligand-to-metal charge transfer states, the fluorinated Eu complexes proved to be bright luminophores capable of delivering 50% quantum yield under UV radiation. The role of fluorination and carbon chain length was examined by using experimental spectroscopic methods and the results obtained were largely in good agreement with theoretical calculations (Judd-Ofelt theory analysis, and semiempirical quantum chemistry calculations) supporting our key experimental findings.

This review discusses the chemical properties, synthesis and detection, and biological functions of a molecular group of cis-2-unsaturated fatty acids, containing fatty acid carbon chains of various lengths and cis double-bond configurations, known as the diffusible signaling factor family (DSFF). Early postulation of the conserved nature of the DSFF among Gram-negative bacteria have now been challenged by the latest evidences that unraveled their presence in a various other distinct microorganisms. Over the last decade, a significant depth and breadth of understanding has been made on the multifaceted functions of DSFFs among bacteria, and their interactions with evolutionarily divergent fungi, plants insects and small animals.

The primary production of fjords across the Arctic and Subarctic is undergoing significant transformations due to the climatically driven retreat of glaciers and ice sheets. However, the implications of these changes for upper trophic levels remain largely unknown. In this study, we employ both bulk and compound-specific stable isotope analyses to investigate how shifts at the base of fjord food webs impact the carbon and energy sources of consumers.

An integrated strategy for sequential nitrite removal and methane recovery: Sludge fermentation driven by nitrite reduction.

Water Res X

May 2025

National Engineering Laboratory for Advanced Municipal Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Technology, Engineering Research Center of Beijing, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, PR China.

Although the treatment of sludge with free nitrous acid can effectively recover short chain fatty acids, the feasibility of sequential nitrite reduction and methane recovery without acidic pH adjustment is still scarcely studied. Therefore, this study aimed to provide insights into the effect of nitrite at different levels on nitrite reduction and methane production. The results showed that the nitrite concentrations of 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg/L were completely reduced in 1, 2, 2 and 4 days, respectively.

The interplay between attractive London dispersion forces and steric effects due to repulsive forces resulting from the Pauli principle often determines the geometry and stability of nanostructures. Aromatic polyimides (PI) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were chosen as building blocks as two components in the hetero delocalized electron nanostructures. Two PIs, having the same diamine part and different linkage substituents between two phenyl rings of dianhydride part, one linked with ether bond (C-O-C) (OPI), the other with C-(CF3)2 (FPI), were investigated.
