CO₂-enhanced methane production by integration of bamboo biochar during anaerobic co-digestion.

J Environ Manage

December 2024

China-UK Low Carbon College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China; School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China. Electronic address:

This study investigates the enhancement of methane production in anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) through the introduction of exogenous CO₂ and the application of bamboo biochar. Exogenous CO₂ boosts biogas yield by providing an additional carbon source, which requires optimized solubility and pH buffering to ensure effective methanation. Biochar serves as an electron shuttle and pH stabilizer, facilitating CO solubility and syntrophic interactions that enhance microbial stability.

Disposable Plastic Waste and Associated Antioxidants and Plasticizers Generated by Online Food Delivery Services in China: National Mass Inventories and Environmental Release.

Environ Sci Technol

February 2024

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Chemical Pollution and Environmental Safety & MOE Key Laboratory of Theoretical Chemistry of Environment, School of Environment, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510006, China.

China's online food delivery (OFD) services consume enormous amounts of disposable plastics. Here, we investigated and modeled the national mass inventories and environmental release of plastics and chemical additives in the plastic. The extra-tree regression identified six key descriptors in determining OFD sales in Chinese cities.

A multi-criteria decision framework for circular wastewater systems in emerging megacities of the Global South.

Sci Total Environ

February 2024

Peruvian LCA & Industrial Ecology Network (PELCAN), Department of Engineering, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Avenida Universitaria 1801, San Miguel 15088, Lima, Peru.

Lima faces increasing water stress due to demographic growth, climate change and outdated water management infrastructure. Moreover, its highly centralized wastewater management system is currently unable to recover water or other resources. Hence, the primary aim of this study is to identify suitable wastewater treatment alternatives for both eutrophication mitigation and indirect potable reuse (IPR).

Leverage of resource efficiency over environmental emissions: Case of a megacity in China.

Sci Total Environ

February 2023

UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, Tongji University, 1239 Siping Rd., Shanghai 200092, China; Circular Economy Research Institute, Tongji University, 1239 Siping Rd., Shanghai 200092, China.

Material metabolism in a Chinese megacity, Shanghai, was investigated with an integrated approach. Production-based raw material input, city-wide waste output and carbon emissions were compiled for the period 1995-2020, by computing hundreds of products and by-products. Decoupling of these resource and environmental flows from economic development was assessed, and the socio-economic and technical drivers were decomposed.
