The changing face of meningococcal infection.

Clin Infect Pract

North Bristol NHS Trust, United Kingdom.

Published: November 2021

Menigococcal infection is caused by a Gram negative diplococci. Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is caused by 6 capsular groups. The spectrum of infection is broad, with meningitis and meningococcal sepsis associated with a case fatality of between 4 and 20%. The main burden of disease is felt in the under 1's and this is where vaccination has been focused. Vaccination against MenC begun in 1999, with vaccines against Men ACWY and MenB added to the schedule in 2015. Over the last 1o years rates of IMD in the UK have fallen by over 50%. The impact of COVID-19 on cases has also been felt, with early data suggesting a significant drop in cases during the first wave in 2020. Despite the success of vaccination we need to remain vigilant. Clonal expansion of hypervirulent strains has been seen in epidemics and we have a significant proportion of the population who remain unvaccinated.

Model organisms are vital for biomedical research and drug testing but face high costs, complexity, and ethical issues. While newer techniques like organoids and assembloids have shown improvements, they still remain inadequate in addressing all research needs. In this study, we present a new method for maintaining the prostate gland of the earthworm, Eudrilus eugeniae ex vivo and examine its potential for regeneration and drug screening.

Anatomical considerations for thread-based brow lifting and wrinkle treatment.

J Dermatolog Treat

December 2025

Division in Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Department of Oral Biology, Human Identification Research Institute, BK21 FOUR Project, Yonsei University College of Dentistry, Seoul, South Korea.

This review explores the anatomical considerations and technical aspects of thread lifting for the forehead and eyebrow, focusing on the relationships between vascular structures, muscular anatomy, and age-related changes in the forehead-eyebrow complex. It highlights the critical importance of understanding neurovascular pathways, particularly the supratrochlear and supraorbital vessels, as well as the appropriate thread placement techniques necessary for optimal outcomes. The review demonstrates that I-shaped threads, when placed beneath the frontalis muscle, provide a safer and equally effective alternative to traditional U-shaped designs.

Division of Endocrinology, Department of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, United States; Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, United States.

Background: Young adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus often face challenges managing their condition, leading to elevated glucose and heightened psychosocial distress. Diabetes care traditionally focuses on biomedical outcomes, with less emphasis on well-being. Occupational therapy offers a holistic approach to managing diabetes by integrating changes to daily habits and routines and psychosocial support.

Purpose: Radiation protection glasses reduce eye lens exposure in Interventional Radiology (IR). However, the protection ratio differs for the lead equivalent content and shape of the lenses. This study aimed to examine factors effective in reducing the lens dose by measuring the protection ratio of scattered radiation due to changes in the surgeon's face orientation, various lead equivalents, and shapes.
