Cold waves crossing the Amazon rainforest are an extraordinary phenomenon likely to be affected by climate change. We here describe an extensive cold wave that occurred in June 2023 in Amazonian-Andean forests and compare environmental temperatures to experimentally measured thermal tolerances and their impact on lowland animal communities (insects and wild mammals). While we found strong reductions in activity abundance of all animal groups under the cold wave, tropical lowland animals showed thermal tolerance limits below the lowest environmental temperatures measured during the cold wave.

The bacterial protein quality control (PQC) network comprises a set of genes that promote proteostasis (proteome homeostasis) through proper protein folding and function via chaperones, proteases, and a protein translational machinery. It participates in vital cellular processes and influences organismal development and evolution. In this review, we examine the mechanistic bases for how the bacterial PQC network influences molecular evolution.

Aging is an inevitable physiological process in organisms, and the development of tumors is closely associated with cellular senescence. This article initially examines the role of cellular senescence in tumorigenesis, emphasizing the correlation between telomere length-a marker of cellular senescence-and tumor risk. Concurrently, the study explores the expression levels of senescence-associated markers, such as p16, p53, and mTOR, in the context of tumor development.

Here, we define a requirement for neural activity in mobilizing the antioxidant defenses of the nematode both during prolonged oxidative stress and prior to its onset. We show that acetylcholine-deficient mutants are particularly vulnerable to prolonged oxidative stress.
