Conjugated polymer polypyrrole (PPy) with high electrical conductivity and excellent photothermal effect has been adopted as multifunctional surface modifier on ternary metal sulfide (CdIn S , CIS) photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for the first time. As a p-type conducting polymer, PPy forms p-n junction with n-type CIS to relieve the bulk carrier recombination. Besides, the incorporation of Ni ions into PPy matrix further enhances the surface charge carrier transfer at photoanode/electrolyte interfaces. Furthermore, the excellent photothermal effect of PPy produces heat under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which can elevate the temperature of CIS photoanode in situ and further enhance the PEC performance. As a result, the optimum CIS/Ni-PPy photoanode shows an obviously enhanced photocurrent density of 6.07 mA cm at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode under the irradiation of AM 1.5G combined with NIR light, which is the highest among all the CIS based photoanodes reported to date. The synergetic effect of Ni-PPy significantly suppresses the bulk recombination, decreases the carrier transfer resistance, and accelerates the surface water oxidation dynamics, resulting in high carrier injection efficiency over 80% in the measured potential range. The universality of the multifunctional surface modifier strategy has also been confirmed on metal oxide photoanode.

Elastomers are of great significance in developing smart materials for information encryption, and their unique self-healing and highly flexible properties provide innovative solutions to enhance security and anti-counterfeiting effectiveness. However, challenges remain in the multifunctional combination of mechanical properties, self-healing, degradability, and luminescence of these materials. Herein, a chemodynamic covalent adaptable network (CCAN)-induced robust, self-healing, and degradable fluorescent elastomer is proposed.

Ultrahigh-nickel layered oxide cathodes (≥90% nickel) possess exceptionally high discharge capacities, which can significantly improve the energy density of lithium-ion batteries and alleviate the driving range anxiety of electric vehicles. However, the high interfacial reactivity of ultrahigh-nickel cathodes, especially the detrimental side reactions with harmful acidic species like HF in the electrolyte, can deteriorate the battery interface and reduce the cycle life, hindering their practical application. In this study, 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane (PTTS-NCO) is introduced as the electrolyte additive, which can effectively scavenge the harmful acidic species in the electrolyte and form a protective surface layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performance of the battery (NCM90/Li).

Ionomeric Nanofibers: A Versatile Platform for Advanced Functional Materials.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Chang Gung University, Taoyuan 333, Taiwan.

The one-dimensional nanomaterials known as nanofibers have remarkable qualities, such as large surface areas, adjustable porosity, and superior mechanical strength. Ionomers, types of polymers, have ionic functional groups that give them special properties, including high mechanical strength, water absorption capacity, and ionic conductivity. Integrating ionomers and nanofibers with diverse materials and advanced methodologies has been shown to improve the mechanical strength, processing capacity, and multifunctional attributes of ionomeric nanofibers.

The most commonly used methods to chemically assess grape and wine quality with high sensitivity and selectivity require lengthy analysis time and can be resource intensive. Here, we developed a rapid and non-destructive method that would help in grading and decision support. In this work, we demonstrate that integrating a three-dimensional (3D) material for volatile sampling with mass spectrometry detection can be used to sample grapes for phytosanitary, quality or smoke-taint assessments at low levels of marker compounds.

We report the design and development of a novel multifunctional nanostructure, RB-AuSiO_HSA-DOX, where tri-modal cancer treatment strategies-photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemotherapy-luminescent properties and targeting are integrated into the same scaffold. It consists of a gold core with optical and thermo-plasmonic properties and is covered by a silica shell entrapping a well-known photosensitizer and luminophore, Rose Bengal (RB). The nanoparticle surface was decorated with Human Serum Albumin (HSA) through a covalent conjugation to confer its targeting abilities and as a carrier of Doxorubicin (DOX), one of the most effective anticancer drugs in clinical chemotherapy.
