Many models of motor control emphasize the role of sensorimotor cortex in movement, principally through the projections that corticospinal neurons (CSNs) make to the spinal cord. Additionally, CSNs possess expansive supraspinal axon collaterals, the functional organization of which is largely unknown. Using anatomical and electrophysiological circuit-mapping techniques in the mouse, we reveal dorsolateral striatum as the preeminent target of CSN collateral innervation. We found that this innervation is biased so that CSNs targeting different striatal pathways show biased targeting of spinal cord circuits. Contrary to more conventional perspectives, CSNs encode not only individual movements, but also information related to the onset and offset of motor sequences. Furthermore, similar activity patterns are broadcast by CSN populations targeting different striatal circuits. Our results reveal a logic of coordinated connectivity between forebrain and spinal circuits, where separate CSN modules broadcast similarly complex information to downstream circuits, suggesting that differences in postsynaptic connectivity dictate motor specificity.

Recent studies have shown that nocturnal singing in diurnal birds is a common phenomenon, however, the understanding of the mechanisms, functions and consequences of this behaviour has been lacking. We focused on the night singing of two diurnal songbirds-the yellowhammer and the common chaffinch that are widely distributed in Europe. We conducted day and night playback experiments, during which we broadcast songs of an unfamiliar male to the territory holder at two different stages of the breeding season, to examine whether the night singing in species which normally do not sing at night elicits responses from their conspecifics.

Due to the inherent broadcasting nature and openness of wireless transmission channels, wireless communication systems are vulnerable to the eavesdropping of malicious attackers and usually encounter undesirable situations of information leakage. The problem may be more serious when a passive eavesdropping device is directly connected to the transmitter of a single-input single-output (SISO) system. To deal with this urgent situation, a novel IRS-assisted physical-layer secure transmission scheme based on joint transmitter perturbation and IRS reflection (JPR) is proposed, such that the secrecy of wireless SISO systems can be comprehensively guaranteed regardless of whether the reflection-based jamming from the IRS to the eavesdropper is blocked or not.
