The Internet of Things (IoT) plays an ever-increasing role in enabling Smart City applications. An ontology-based semantic approach can help improve interoperability between a variety of IoT-generated as well as complementary data needed to drive these applications. While multiple ontology catalogs exist, using them for IoT and smart city applications require significant amount of work. In this paper, we demonstrate We consider four ontology catalogs that are relevant for IoT and smart cities: READY4SmartCities, LOV, OpenSensingCity (OSC) and, LOV4IoT. To support semantic interoperability with the reuse of ontology-based smart city applications, we present a methodology to enrich ontology catalogs with those ontologies. Our methodology is generic enough to be applied to any other domains as is demonstrated by its adoption by OSC and LOV4IoT ontology catalogs. Researchers and developers have completed a survey based evaluation of the LOV4IoT catalog. The usefulness of ontology catalogs ascertained through this evaluation has encouraged their ongoing growth and maintenance. The quality of IoT and smart city ontologies have been evaluated to improve the ontology catalog quality. We also share the lessons learned regarding ontology best practices and provide suggestions for ontology improvements with a set of software tools.

Glycoconjugates are present on microbial surfaces and play critical roles in modulating interactions with the environment and the host. Extensive research on microbial glycans, including elucidating the structural diversity of the glycan moieties of glycoconjugates and polysaccharides, has been carried out to investigate the function of glycans in modulating the interactions between the host and microbes, to explore their potential applications in the therapeutic targeting of pathogenic species, and in the use as probiotics in gut microbiomes. However, glycan-related information is dispersed across numerous databases and a vast amount of literature, which makes it laborious and time-consuming to identify and gather the relevant information about microbial glycosylation.

Protein activity, abundance, and stability can be regulated by post-translational modification including ubiquitination. Ubiquitination is conserved among eukaryotes and plays a central role in modulating cellular function; yet, we lack comprehensive catalogs of proteins that are modified by ubiquitin in plants. We treated wild-type and deletion mutant zebrafish embryos at 24 h post-fertilization with 1 µM of the topoisomerase I inhibitor, camptothecin (CPT), for 4 h to catalogue gene expression changes induced by this DNA damage treatment and to understand if these changes are influenced by loss of miR-34a. The 4 sample groups of 3 independent biological samples consisting of 30 embryos each were analyzed by RNA-sequencing using the recently updated zebrafish transcriptome annotation based on GRCz11, which enabled a more complete and sensitive read mapping and gene assignment than standard annotations.
