Enantioselective reactions that install functional groups at the positions of unactivated C-H bonds can be envisioned to produce intermediates for the synthesis of the active ingredients in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals directly from simple feedstocks. Among these C-H bond functionalization reactions, those that form carbon-silicon (C-Si) and carbon-boron (C-B) bonds have been pursued because the products of these reactions can be converted to those containing a wide range of functional groups and because compounds containing silicon and boron possess unique properties that can be valuable for medicinal and materials chemistry. Although the silylation and borylation of C-H bonds have undergone extensive development during the past two decades, enantioselective versions of these reactions were not known until a few years ago. In this Minireview, we present the rapid development of enantioselective silylation and borylation of C-H bonds, with an emphasis on the design and development of the types of chiral ligands needed to achieve these reactions and an intention to inspire an expansion of these types of transformations.

Direct cross-coupling reactions between two similar unactivated partners are challenging but constitute a powerful strategy for the creation of new carbon-carbon bonds in organic synthesis. [4]Dendralenes are a class of acyclic branched conjugated oligoenes with great synthetic potential for the rapid generation of structural complexity, yet the chemistry of [4]dendralenes remains an unexplored field due to their limited accessibility. Herein, we report a highly selective palladium-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling of two allenes with the presence of a directing olefin in one of the allenes, enabling the facile synthesis of a broad range of functionalized [4]dendralenes in a convergent modular manner.

Three bisferrocene-based bis(acylthiourea) positional isomers, namely, 1,2-bis(ferrocenylcarbonylthioureido)benzene (1), 1,3-bis(ferrocenylcarbonylthioureido)benzene (2) and 1,4-bis(ferrocenylcarbonylthioureido)benzene (3), all [Fe(CH)(CHNOS)], have been synthesized via facile nucleophilic addition reactions of 2.3 equivalents of ferrocenoyl isothiocyanate with o-, m- and p-phenylenediamine, respectively. The structures of the three new synthesized isomers were fully characterized by H NMR, C NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, elemental analyses and cyclic voltammetry.

New efficient and sustainable methods for the removal of malachite green (MG) from environmental media are needed. In this study, corn straw was co-pyrolyzed with montmorillonite under a variety of conditions (400, 500, 600, and 700 °C and 10-40 wt% montmorillonite), without any use of toxic chemicals, to produce a series of biochar-clay composites. Characteristics of the composites that make them promising contaminant sorbents include a uniform lamellar-particle micromorphology, enhanced mesoporous structure and surface area (53.

The synthesis of a transient cationic phosphaborene [(Mes*)P=B(CAAC)]+ (Mes* = 2,4,6,-trit-tert-butylphenyl, CAAC = cyclic alkylamino carbene) by halide abstraction from the B-brominated analogue is reported. This species was found to undergo rapid and selective intramolecular aliphatic C-H bond activation to yield a phosphinoborenium cation, which undergoes facile deprotonation to give a cyclic base-stabilized phosphaborene. Computational investigation of the mechanism of C-H activation indicates a boron-centred activation route with an exceptionally low barrier of 8 kJ mol-1, followed by a nearly barrierless hydride migration from boron to phosphorus.

In organic synthesis, C(sp)-H functionalization is a revolutionary method that allows direct alteration of unactivated C-H bonds. It can obviate the need for pre-functionalization and provides access to streamlined and atom economical routes for the synthesis of complex molecules starting from simple starting materials. Many strategies have evolved, such as photoredox catalysis, organocatalysis, non-directed C-H activation, transiently directed C-H activation, and native functionality directed C-H activation.
