Depleted uranium (DU) is a byproduct of uranium enrichment, which can cause heavy-metal toxicity and radiation toxicity as well as serious damage to the kidneys. However, the mechanism of renal injury induced by DU is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the role of ethylmalonic encephalopathy 1 (ETHE1) in DU-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

The therapeutic benefit of the oral adsorbent drug AST-120 in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is related to an indoxyl sulfate (IS)-lowering action. Diabetes and dyslipidemia might worsen kidney damage in CKD. However, it is not known whether AST-120 influences lipid abnormalities as well as renal function in patients with CKD and diabetes.

Maintaining the physiological function of the vascular endothelium and endothelial glycocalyx is crucial for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, which is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Damage to these structures can lead to atherosclerosis, hypertension, and other cardiovascular problems, especially in individuals with risk factors such as diabetes and obesity. Endothelial dysfunction is associated with ischemic disease and has a negative impact on overall cardiovascular health.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated predominantly during cellular respiration and play a significant role in signaling within the cell and between cells. However, excessive accumulation of ROS can lead to cellular dysfunction, disease progression, and apoptosis that can lead to organ dysfunction. To overcome the short half-life of ROS and the relatively small amount produced, various imaging methods have been developed, using both endogenous and exogenous means to monitor ROS in disease settings.
