spp. is a group of trichuroid nematodes that mainly infect non-human primates and domestic cats. The lifecycle of these nematodes remains unclear. In non-human primates, spp. were found in the nasal cavity. However, ulcerative dermatitis has been reported in infected cats. An adult, intact, female domestic short-haired cat was presented with ulcerative pododermatitis of all limbs. Punch biopsy was performed at the edge of the ulcerative wound for histopathological investigation and showed necrosis and infiltration of inflammatory cells around the nematode-like lesion. Eggs with -like characteristics were present. Tissue sections were subjected to DNA extraction and PCR targeting , using primers designed from . The phylogenetic tree revealed that DNA obtained from the lesion of the domestic cat was grouped with spp. from the olive glass mouse () and , both from the red fox (). The study is the first report of feline anatrichosomiasis in Thailand, and we present both pathological findings and molecular evidence. The cat was successfully treated with emodepsine/praziquantel. The skin lesion recovered within 3 days after anthelmintic treatment. Because spp. have been reported in humans, the zoonotic potential of this parasite should be considered.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudomonas luteola is a gram-negative bacterium that thrives in humid environments and can cause infections mainly in immunocompromised individuals, often after invasive medical procedures.
  • The bacterium was first reported as a pathogen in ferrets in Spain in 2012 and has since been identified sporadically in various countries, associated with serious conditions like respiratory disease and abscesses.
  • A clinical case demonstrated successful non-invasive treatment for a ferret with ulcerative pododermatitis and lymphadenitis caused by P. luteola, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention.

Molecular evidence of sterile tissue damage during pathogenesis of the pododermatitis aseptica hemorrhagica circumscripta is associated with disturbed epidermal-dermal homeostasis.

Pododermatitis aseptica hemorrhagica circumscripta is associated with metalloproteinase 2 weakening of distal phalangeal suspensory structures and sinkage of the distal phalanx in the claw capsule. Pressure from the tuberculum flexorium on the sole epidermis and dermis produces hemorrhagic tissue injury and defective horn production appearing as yellow-red, softened claw horn in region 4 of the sole. A model of the MAPK/ERK signal cascade orchestrating epidermal-dermal homeostasis was employed to determine if sterile inflammatory responses are linked to disturbed signal transduction for epidermal homeostasis in sole epidermis and dermis.

Transcriptional responses consistent with perturbation in dermo-epidermal homeostasis in septic sole ulceration.

J Dairy Sci

October 2024

Department of Animal and Food Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19717. Electronic address:

The aim of this study was to evaluate transcriptional changes in the sole epidermis and dermis of bovine claws with septic sole ulceration of the lateral claw. Assessment included changes in transcripts orchestrating epidermal homeostatic processes, including epidermal proliferation, differentiation, inflammation, and cell signaling. Sole epidermis and dermis samples were removed from region 4 of lesion-bearing lateral and lesion-free medial claws of pelvic limbs in multiparous, lactating Holstein cows.
