Article Synopsis
  • - Toxocara is a type of parasitic nematode mainly infecting pets like dogs and cats, with potential harm to humans due to its ability to migrate within host tissues and alter immune responses through specific secreted products.
  • - Recent research has focused on extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by Toxocara and their significance in diagnostics and molecular therapy, leading to various isolation techniques being tested.
  • - The study revealed that ultrafiltration was the most effective method for isolating EVs from Toxocara larvae, and electron microscopy confirmed the distinct structure of these vesicles, which is valuable for further research on helminth-related EVs.

Many dogs are sourced from the southeastern USA, which historically has a high prevalence rate for many parasites and parasitic diseases. The Colorado Department of Agriculture Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA) requires animal shelters and animal welfare organizations to report annually a variety of statistics including the numbers of dogs imported into Colorado from out of state.

To study the frequency of ocular lesions in 30 gerbils infected with 100 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis, indirect binocular ophthalmoscopy was performed 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and 38 days after infection. All the animals presented larvae in the tissues and 80% presented ocular lesions. Hemorrhagic foci in the choroid and retina were present in 92% of the animals with ocular lesions.
