Podocyte Aging: Why and How Getting Old Matters.

J Am Soc Nephrol

Lerner Research Institute, Department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio.

Published: November 2021

AI Article Synopsis

  • - The text examines the impact of healthy aging on kidney function, particularly focusing on the changes in podocytes—important cells in the kidney that degrade with age.
  • - It explores how age-related changes in podocytes can worsen kidney health, especially when combined with other diseases that often affect older adults.
  • - The review also discusses potential strategies to prevent further damage to podocytes and highlights how biological processes related to cell growth influence aging in both humans and rodents.

Article Abstract

The effects of healthy aging on the kidney, and how these effects intersect with superimposed diseases, are highly relevant in the context of the population's increasing longevity. Age-associated changes to podocytes, which are terminally differentiated glomerular epithelial cells, adversely affect kidney health. This review discusses the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying podocyte aging, how these mechanisms might be augmented by disease in the aged kidney, and approaches to mitigate progressive damage to podocytes. Furthermore, we address how biologic pathways such as those associated with cellular growth confound aging in humans and rodents.
