Influence of wastewater effluents on the bioaccumulation of volatile methylsiloxanes in the St. Lawrence River.

Published: February 2022

The bioaccumulation of cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (D3 to D6) as well as linear siloxanes (L3 to L5) was studied in a food web in the St. Lawrence River downstream of the effluent of the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Montreal, Canada. For most species, differences in δN in fish and prey showed a clear separation of individual fish feeding in food webs influenced by the wastewater plume from those feeding outside the plume. Cyclic siloxanes were detected in all biotic samples from the individuals identified as feeding in the effluent plume. Siloxane D5 accounted for more than 80% of the total siloxanes. Linear siloxane L5 was also abundant in walleye and gull eggs. Total siloxane concentrations in suspended sediments were 17.3 times higher than in surface sediments in the region of the river in the effluent plume. Caged freshwater mussels (Elliptio sp.), placed in the effluent plume, bioaccumulated 43 times more total siloxanes than PBDEs in 30 days, demonstrating how readily siloxanes are taken up in biota and what a significant component of the contaminant body burden they can account for. The sediment-biota accumulation factors (BSAF) for total siloxanes (∑ D3 to D6 and L3 to L5) showed values of 65.4, 27.8, 9.9 and 6.4 for walleye, northern pike, yellow perch and round goby respectively.

Among emerging contaminants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have captured public attention based upon their environmental ubiquity and potential risks to human health. Due to their typical surface release conditions and amphiphilic properties, PFAS tend to sorb to soil and accumulate at the air-water interface within the vadose zone. These processes can result in substantial plume attenuation.

Modeling the dispersion of wastewater pollutants in Gaza's coastal waters.

Mar Pollut Bull

November 2024

Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, Jouf University, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

The disposal of sewage water in Gaza City has emerged as a significant issue with extensive environmental repercussions. This study seeks to investigate the pollution plume resulting from the discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage water through Gaza City's main outlet into the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, it aims to predict scenarios for various design configurations of submerged outfalls with either single-port or multi-port diffusers and compare these scenarios against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recreational water quality criteria.

The Efficiency of Phosphate Removal via Shallow Wastewater Injection into a Saline Carbonate Aquifer.

ACS ES T Water

August 2024

Department of Geosciences, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania 16802, United States.

Wastewater-derived phosphate contributes to eutrophication if the phosphate is not efficiently removed before it is discharged to surface waters. In the Florida Keys (USA), shallow injection of treated wastewater into saline limestone aquifers is a common mode of wastewater disposal. We assessed the possibility of efficient and permanent phosphate removal following injection at a wastewater treatment facility in Marathon, Florida.

Plastic Analysis with a Plasmonic Nano-Gold Sensor Coated with Plastic-Binding Peptides.

J Xenobiot

June 2024

Environment and Climate Change Canada, Aquatic Contaminants Research Division, 105 McGill, Montréal, QC H2Y 2E7, Canada.

Contamination with plastics of small dimensions (<1 µm) represents a health concern for many terrestrial and aquatic organisms. This study examined the use of plastic-binding peptides as a coating probe to detect various types of plastic using a plasmon nano-gold sensor. Plastic-binding peptides were selected for polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) based on the reported literature.

Infiltration of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) into groundwater can be a source of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, that are not fully removed during the treatment processes. A multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers, is applied in the Vistrenque Aquifer (Gard, France) to assess the dispersion of such unintentional plumes and its potential implication on groundwater quality for CECs in a small catchment area. In this area, a point source of WWTP effluent causes contaminant infiltration and unintentional transfer to the aquifer.
