Article Abstract

New nanoparticles (Y6 NPs) based on the A-DA'D-A fused-ring conjugated small molecule Y6 have been prepared for the combined photothermal and photodynamic therapy of cancer. Y6 NPs show excellent light absorption from 300 to 900 nm, a good photothermal conversion efficiency of 57% and reactive oxygen species generation capability. The high photothermal conversion ability and superior photodynamic activity of Y6 NPs endow them with great potential for cancer therapy.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are effective method for tumor treatment. However, the limited variety and quantity of photothermal agents (PTAs) and photosensitizer (PSs) are still major challenges. Moreover, the cell apoptosis mechanism induced by PDT and PTT is still elusive.

The high-performance Y6-based nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) feature a C-shaped A-DA'D-A-type molecular architecture with a central electron-deficient thiadiazole (Tz) A' unit. In this work, we designed and synthesized a new A-D-A-type NFA, termed CB16, having a C-shaped -benzodipyrrole-based skeleton of Y6 but with the Tz unit eliminated. When processed with nonhalogenated xylene without using any additives, the binary PM6:CB16 devices display a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.

  • The study developed four new A-DA'D-A acceptors using perylene diimide units, focusing on variations in halogenation and functional group substitutions.
  • By integrating dithiophenepyrrole units to create fused-hPDI cores, the research enhanced the intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in stronger light absorption.
  • The best performing organic photovoltaic device used the acceptor FhPDI-IC2F, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 9.0%, mainly due to its superior absorption properties and efficient charge transfer relative to the other tested acceptors.

The A-DA'D-A fused-ring electron acceptors with an angular fusion mode and electron-deficient core has significantly boosted organic photovoltaic efficiency. Here, the intrinsic role of the peculiar structure is revealed by comparing representative A-DA'D-A acceptor Y6 with its A-D-A counterparts having different fusion modes. Owing to the more delocalized HOMO and deeper LUMO level, Y6 exhibits stronger and red-shifted absorption relative to the linear and angular fused A-D-A acceptors, respectively.
