To reveal the effect of vein-bionic surface textures on the tribological behavior of cylindrical roller thrust bearings (CRTBs) under starved lubrication, six kinds of leaves (Forsythia, Clausena lansiu, Ash, Purple leaf plum, Pipal and Apricot) were chose and their simplified patterns were fabricated on the shaft washers of CRTBs using laser surface texturing. The coefficients of friction (COFs) of vein-bionic textured bearings were measured using a vertical universal wear test rig. Their mass losses and worn surfaces were also characterized. The results show that: There is important influence of the symmetry of vein-bionic textures and the number of secondary veins on the friction and wear properties of vein-bionic textured CRTBs under starved lubrication. Compared to the smooth group, the COFs and mass losses of vein-bionic textured bearings are all reduced. Among all groups, the tribological performance of bearings with a pattern inspired from Ash is the best. Its wear loss is reduced by 16.23% and its COF is reduced by 15.79%. This work would provide a valuable reference for the raceway design and optimization of roller rolling element bearings.

This article assesses the potential of using a diamond-like carbon coating doped with tungsten, a-C:H:W (WC/C), on the sliding pairs of refrigeration compressors. The ability of WC/C coating to provide low wear and a low coefficient of friction was experimentally verified in a specific refrigeration compressor operating environment (lubrication with oil diluted with refrigerant) and under extreme operating conditions (starved lubrication with a small amount of oil). Conditions of starved lubrication with a substance of reduced lubricity promote a temperature increase and high mechanical (friction) stresses on the surface of the sliding pairs.

Owing to nano-MoS's excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties, nano-MoS, which can act as a nano-additive in lubricating oil or solid lubricants, is believed to have great potential in the lubrication of power machinery and moving parts of a spacecraft. The molecular dynamics method was used to construct a rough surface and a multi-level asperity structure to simulate starved lubrication before oil film breakdown, and the lubrication mechanism of MoS as a nano-additive or directly coated on the textured surface could reduce the friction coefficient and wear was explained from the atomic perspective. Simulations showed that the multilayer MoS played a role of load-bearing at light load or low velocity, and slipped into the grooves to repair the surface under heavy load or high velocity.

To address the problems of the difficult processing and internal microstructure disorder of porous bearing cages, Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) porous self-lubricating bearing cage material was prepared based on a fused deposition molding (FDM) process, and the porous samples were heat-treated on this basis, the research was carried out around the synergistic design of the material preparation, microstructure, and tribological properties. The results show that the pore size of the PEEK porous material prepared by the FDM process meets the requirements of the porous bearing cage; the samples with higher porosity also have higher oil content, and all the samples show high oil retention. Under dry friction conditions, the higher the porosity of the porous material, the larger the friction coefficient, and the friction coefficients of each sample after heat treatment show the same pattern; under starved lubrication conditions, the friction coefficient of the porous PEEK material decreased significantly compared to the compact PEEK material, showing a better self-lubrication effect, and the porous samples reached the best self-lubrication effect after heat treatment.

The present work investigates the friction reduction capability of two types of micro-textures (grooves and dimples) created on steel surfaces using a vertical milling machine. The wear studies were conducted using a pin-on-disc tribometer, with the results indicating a better friction reduction capacity in the case of the dimple texture as compared to the grooved texture. The microscopic images of the pin surface revealed deep furrows and significant damage on the pin surfaces of the groove-textured disc.

The presented results show that the presence of refrigerant significantly deteriorates the lubricating properties of compressor oil under starved lubrication conditions (with a small amount of oil). The change can be 40-120% compared to the properties of the oil alone. Additionally, in the group of oils that are substitutes (operational alternatives) compatible with a given refrigerant, the effect of the refrigerant on the lubricating properties varies.
