Polymicrobial biofilms comprising and can increase the frequency and severity of oral diseases. This study assessed oral keratinocyte cell death, apoptosis and/or necrosis, promoted by soluble factors from single and dual biofilms of and . The soluble factors were obtained from the 16-h biofilm growth media. Cell viability was assessed by MTT and cell membrane damage by LDH. SEM was used for morphology changes. Assessment of apoptosis and necrosis was performed using annexin V and propidium iodide and caspases -2, -3, -6, -8 and -9. Statistical analysis was conducted with ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 5%). Dual biofilms promoted the greatest harmful effect on oral cells, with a viability rate of 31.76%, damage to cell membranes and LDH released. Dual biofilms also induced higher percentages of necrotic cells (24.95%). Apoptosis was associated with caspases -2, -3, -6 and -8 activation.

Healing of diabetic wounds is significantly impeded by a complex environment comprising biofilm formation, excessive inflammation, and compromised angiogenic capacity, leading to a disordered physiological healing process. Restoration and maintenance of a normal and orderly healing process in diabetic wounds remain unmet therapeutic objectives. Herein, an innovative bimetal-phenolic network hydrogel system is designed with a concentric circular structure, enabling dual-drug delivery with differentiated release kinetics.

Background: Diarrhea caused by non-O1/O139-group e (NOVC) tends to be mild and can be readily overlooked. In this report, a NOVC strain designated XXM was isolated from the blood of a 68-year-old male undergoing surgical treatment for a bile duct malignancy in October 2023.

Methods: XXM was identified through a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS).

Innovations in nanostructured surfaces have found a practical place in the medical area with use in implant materials for post-operative infection prevention. These textured surfaces should be dual purpose: (1) bactericidal on contact and (2) resistant to biofilm formation over prolonged periods. Here, hydrothermally etched titanium surfaces were tested against two highly antimicrobial resistant microbial species, methicillin-resistant and .

The emergence of resistance in represents a significant global health challenge, particularly due to the hurdle of effectively penetrating biofilms with antimicrobials. Moreover, the rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens has driven the urgent need for developing innovative therapeutic approaches to overcome antibiotic resistance. Antibacterial phototherapy strategies have shown great potential for combating pathogens due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, spatiotemporal controllability, and relatively low rate of resistance emergence.

Chronic wounds are prone to infections with multidrug-resistant bacteria, forming polymicrobial biofilms that limit treatment options and increase the risk of severe complications. Current cleansing options are insufficient to disrupt and remove tenacious biofilms; antibiotic treatments, on the other hand, often fall short against these biofilm-embedded bacteria. This study explores an non-antibiotic approach that extends beyond conventional porphyrin-based phototherapy by using blue light (BL) in conjunction with ferric ions (Fe(III)) to disrupt and eradicate biofilms.
