Objective: To evaluate the effect of songlingxuemaikang (SLXMK) on mild essential hypertension in patients in terms of endothelial function.

Methods: We enrolled 90 patients with mild essential hypertension in Xuanwu Hospital from January 2016 to December 2016. To evaluate the effects of SLXMK, the 90 patients were randomly assigned at a 2∶1 ratio into 2 groups: the SLXMK group (500 mg per capsule, 4500 mg/d, n = 60) and the losartan potassium group (50 mg per table, 50 mg/d, n = 30). The total study period was 12 weeks, and the changes of blood pressure, laboratory test and endothelium function were compared between two groups.

Results: After 12 weeks of treatment with SLXMK, blood pressure (BP) and plasma lipid levels significantly improved (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the reactive hyperemia index (RHI) increased in the SLXMK group (P < 0.05). The results of multivariate logistic regression analyses examining the association of selected variables with showed that high level of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) was positively associated with endothelial dysfunction.

Conclusion: SLXMK not only effectively decreased BP and plasma lipid levels, but also reduced ox-LDL and RHI in patients with mild essential hypertension. And SLXMK might improve endothelial function through decreasing the circulating ox-LDL.

Background: Volume alterations in the parietal subregion have received less attention in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and their role in predicting conversion of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD and cognitively normal (CN) to MCI remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess the volumetric variation of the parietal subregion at different cognitive stages in AD and to determine the role of parietal subregions in CN and MCI conversion.

Methods: We included 662 participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, including 228 CN, 221 early MCI (EMCI), 112 late MCI (LMCI), and 101 AD participants.

Decrease in HBsAg After TAF Switching from Entecavir During Long-Term Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection.

Viruses

December 2024

Third Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Academic Assembly, University of Toyama, 2630 Sugitani, Toyama 930-0194, Japan.

Achieving HBsAg seroclearance is a key goal in treating chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection but remains difficult with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs). Tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF), a recommended NA for managing chronic HBV infection (CHB), has uncertain effects on HBsAg levels and potential adverse events when used long-term after switching from entecavir (ETV). We retrospectively evaluated 77 CHB patients, including 47 who switched from ETV to TAF with a median follow-up of 40 months post-switch and a median of 60 months of HBsAg monitoring pre-switch.

Background/objectives: Water-soluble vitamins, comprising the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C, are essential for normal growth, cellular metabolism, and immune function in pediatric populations. Due to limited storage in the body, these vitamins require consistent intake to prevent deficiencies. Pediatric populations, particularly infants and young children, face a heightened risk of both deficiency and, in rare cases, toxicity due to varying dietary intake and increased developmental needs.

Herbal and Dietary Supplements as Adjunctive Treatment for Mild SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Italy.

Nutrients

January 2025

Unit of Internal Medicine, AOU Policlinico "P. Giaccone", Department of Health Promotion Sciences, Maternal and Infant Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (PROMISE), University of Palermo, 90134 Palermo, Italy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, several observational studies proved a certain efficacy of nutraceuticals, herbal products, and other dietary supplements as adjuvant therapies used alongside antiviral drugs. Although their use has not been widespread in Italy, according to preliminary evidence, many supplements with demonstrated immunomodulatory effects, such as vitamins C and D, herbal medicines and essential oils, might relieve the respiratory symptoms of COVID-19, since SARS-CoV-2 can activate inflammasome-mediated inflammatory signaling pathways. Other observational studies have shown that herbal treatments, such as and ginseng, help alleviate respiratory symptoms and reduce serum levels of inflammatory cytokines, which are typically overexpressed in both adult and pediatric SARS-CoV-2 patients.
