Computational models have shown that directional electrical contacts placed within the epineurium, between the fascicles, and not penetrating the perineurium, can achieve selectivity levels similar to point source contacts placed within the fascicle. The objective of this study is to test, in a murine model, the hypothesis that directed interfascicular contacts are selective.Multiple interfascicular electrodes with directional contacts, exposed on a single face, were implanted in the sciatic nerves of 32 rabbits. Fine-wire intramuscular wire electrodes were implanted to measure electromyographic (EMG) activity from medial and lateral gastrocnemius, soleus, and tibialis anterior muscles. The recruitment data demonstrated that directed interfascicular interfaces, which do not penetrate the perineurium, selectively activate different axon populations.Interfascicular interfaces that are inside the nerve, but do not penetrate the perineurium are an alternative to intrafascicular interfaces and may offer additional selectivity compared to extraneural approaches.

Introduction: Fasciclin-like arabinogalactan-proteins (FLAs) are a family of multi-domain glycoproteins present at the cell surface and walls of plants. FLA12 and homologs in cotton, , and flax have been shown to play important functions regulating secondary cell wall (SCW) development. FLA12 has been shown to have distinct roles from the closely related FLA11 that also functions during SCW development.

Peripheral nerve mapping tools with higher spatial resolution are needed to advance systems neuroscience, and potentially provide a closed-loop biomarker in neuromodulation applications. Two critical challenges of microscale neural interfaces are 1) how to apply them to small peripheral nerves, and 2) how to minimize chronic reactivity. A flexible microneedle nerve array (MINA) is developed, which is the first high-density penetrating electrode array made with axon-sized silicon microneedles embedded in low-modulus thin silicone.

The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for storing elastic energy and positioning the foot for walking and running. Recent research into Achilles tendon anatomy and mechanics has revealed the importance of the Achilles subtendons, which are unique and semi-independent structures arising from each of the three muscular heads of the triceps surae. Of particular importance is the ability for the subtendons to slide, the role that this has in healthy tendons, and the alteration of this property in aging and disease.

Aging is hypothesized to be associated with changes in tendon matrix composition which may lead to alteration of tendon material properties and hence propensity to injury. Altered gene expression may offer insights into disease pathophysiology and thus open new perspectives toward designing pathophysiology-driven therapeutics. Therefore, the current study aimed at identifying naturally occurring differences in tendon micro-morphology and gene expression of newborn, young and old horses.
