The uptake of nutrients or toxicants by different organisms in aquatic systems is known to correlate with different fractions of the nutrient's or toxicant's total concentration. These fractions can be provided by different analytical techniques, from which the better correlation is expected to be found for those with a characteristic length comparable to that in the considered organism uptake. An effective concentration signature can be built up with the concentration values associated to the availability (i.e. fluxes in dynamic techniques) of the nutrient or toxicant measured by various analytical techniques with different characteristic lengths. Here, this new representation was obtained for the pool of Zn complexes in the Mediterranean stream Riera d'Osor (Girona, Catalonia, Spain) with a suite of four analytical techniques. Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping (AGNES) and Polymer Inclusion Membrane (PIM) devices provided the free Zn concentration. Linear Anodic Stripping Voltammetry provided a labile fraction (defined here as c, higher than the free concentration), related to the diffusion layer scale. Diffusion Gradients in Thin-films provided higher labile fractions (known as DGT concentrations, c) connected to the different characteristic lengths of different configurations (e.g. one or two resin discs) longer, in any case, than that corresponding to LASV. The combination of the information retrieved by the techniques allowed to quantify lability degrees of the pool of Zn complexes and to build up the effective concentration signature for this water.

Hydroxycinnamates, like ferulate (FA) and -coumarate (CA), are important components of maize cell walls, which influence pest resistance, ruminal digestibility, and biofuel production. Increasing their concentration has been linked to increased pest resistance, but also may lead to a decrease in nutritional value or bioethanol production efficiency. Therefore, improving forage quality or biofuel production without compromising plant resistance and a thorough understanding of the biosynthesis and deposition of these compounds is necessary, especially in stover, which is the feedstock for second-generation biofuel production and determines animal forage quality.

Adipose tissue engineering requires effective strategies for regenerating adipose tissue, with adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) being favored due to their robust self-renewal capacity and multipotent differentiation potential. In this study, the efficacy of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) mesh containing collagen sponge (CS), seeded with ASCs to promote adipose tissue formation, was investigated. PLLA-CS implants seeded with GFP-positive ASCs were inserted at high concentration (1 × 10 cells/implant, H-ASC) and low concentration (1 × 10 cells/implant, L-ASC), as were unseeded controls.

Background: Improving adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) via digital health interventions (DHIs) for young sexual and gender minority men who have sex with men (YSGMMSM) is promising for reducing the HIV burden. Measuring and achieving effective engagement (sufficient to solicit PrEP adherence) in YSGMMSM is challenging.
Objective: This study is a secondary analysis of the primary efficacy randomized controlled trial (RCT) of Prepared, Protected, Empowered (P3), a digital PrEP adherence intervention that used causal mediation to quantify whether and to what extent intrapersonal behavioral, mental health, and sociodemographic measures were related to effective engagement for PrEP adherence in YSGMMSM.
