The plant hormones brassinosteroids (BRs) and auxin interact to regulate root meristem size. A new study reveals dual and opposing roles for BRs in auxin biosynthesis and signaling output in the Arabidopsis root epidermis, demonstrating that epidermis-derived BR signaling is required for root meristem maintenance through its effect on auxin signaling.

In plants, calcium (Ca) serves as an essential nutrient and signaling molecule. Melatonin is a biologically active and multi-functional hormone that plays an important role in improving nutrient use efficiency. However, its involvement in plant responses to Ca deficiency remains largely unexplored.

Plants dynamically modulate their growth and development to acclimate to the fluctuating light environment via a complex phytohormone network. However, the dynamic molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying how plants regulate phytohormones during skotomorphogenesis and photomorphogenesis are largely unknown. Here, we identified a HD-ZIP II transcription factor, HOMEODOMAIN ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA1 (HAT1), as a key node that modulates the dose effects of brassinosteroids (BRs) and auxin on hypocotyl growth during skotomorphogenesis and photomorphogenesis.

Verticillium dahliae is a destructive, soil-borne pathogen that causes significant losses on numerous important dicots. Recently, beneficial microbes inhabiting the rhizosphere have been exploited and used to control plant diseases. In the present study, Burkholderia gladioli KRS027 demonstrated excellent inhibitory effects against Verticillium wilt in cotton seedlings.

Less Frequently Used Growth Regulators in Plant Tissue Culture.

Plant growth regulators are routinely added to in vitro culture media to foster the growth and differentiation of the cells, tissues, and organs. However, while the literature on usage of the more common auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid, and ethylene is vast, other compounds that also have shown a growth-regulating activity have not been studied as frequently. Such substances are also capable of modulating the responses of plant cells and tissues in vitro by regulating their growth, differentiation, and regeneration competence, but also by enhancing their responses toward biotic and abiotic stress agents and improving the production of secondary metabolites of interest.

Background: Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of phytohormones that regulate a wide range of developmental processes in plants. BR-associated mutants display impaired growth and response to developmental and environmental stimuli.

Results: Here, we found that a BR-deficient mutant det2-1 displayed abnormal root gravitropic growth in Arabidopsis, which was not present in other BR mutants.
