Article Synopsis
  • Facial asymmetry has been noted in Mesoamerican and South American cultures, indicating its historical significance.
  • This study investigates a pre-Hispanic stone face carving from Mexico City that shows signs of facial paralysis, integrating insights from various fields like bioarchaeology and rheumatology.
  • Ongoing research seeks to explore the connections between facial paralysis and rheumatic diseases in ancient populations, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to understand these conditions better.

Underlying drivers of coral reef vulnerability to bleaching in the Mesoamerican Reef.

Coral bleaching, a consequence of stressed symbiotic relationships between corals and algae, has escalated due to intensified heat stress events driven by climate change. Despite global efforts, current early warning systems lack local precision. Our study, spanning 2015-2017 in the Mesoamerican Reef, revealed prevalent intermediate bleaching, peaking in 2017.

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu) is an incompletely defined phenotype of chronic kidney disease (CKD) affecting young individuals mostly in agricultural communities in Central America and South Asia. CKDu is a diagnosis of exclusion made in individuals from endemic regions.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the primary literature on urinary and plasma kidney injury biomarkers measured in the setting of CKDu (through February 2023).

Identification of consistent QTL and candidate genes associated with seed traits in common bean by combining GWAS and RNA-Seq.

Plant Genetic Group, Regional Service for Agrofood Research and Development (SERIDA), 33300, Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain.

Association analysis, colocation study with previously reported QTL, and differential expression analyses allowed the identification of the consistent QTLs and main candidate genes controlling seed traits. Common beans show wide seed variations in shape, size, water uptake, and coat proportion. This study aimed to identify consistent genomic regions and candidate genes involved in the genetic control of seed traits by combining association and differential expression analyses.
