  • A new strain of brown-spored hyphomycetes was discovered on decaying bamboo in a forest stream in China.
  • Phylogenetic studies reveal this strain's unique characteristics, including longer conidiophores and distinct conidia shapes, along with darker hyphae compared to related species, accompanied by detailed illustrations.

Article Abstract

Background: Freshwater fungi are highly diverse and ecologically important in freshwater systems. In China, more than 1000 species of freshwater fungi are known. Here, we present a brown-spored hyphomycetes that was collected on a submerged decaying bamboo culm in a forest stream in China.

New Information: Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS and TUB2 sequences confirm the placement of our new strain in (Herpotrichiellaceae), sister to . sp. nov. differs from related taxa and in having longer conidiophores and cylindrical to pyriform or subclavate conidia with 0-2 septa. also has darker brown hyphae compared to . A morphological description and detailed illustrations of are provided.

Azospirillum argentinense Az19 is an osmotolerant plant growth-promoting bacterium that protects maize plants from drought. In this work, we explored the role of trehalose in the superior performance of Az19 under stress. The trehalase-coding gene treF was constitutively expressed in Az19 through a miniTn7 system.

Peatlands are invaluable but threatened ecosystems that store huge amounts of organic carbon globally and emit the greenhouse gasses carbon dioxide (CO) and methane (CH). Trophic interactions of microbial groups essential for methanogenesis are poorly understood in such systems, despite their importance. Thus, the present study aimed at unraveling trophic interactions between fermenters and methanogens in a nitrogen-limited, subarctic, pH-neutral fen.

In freshwater lakes and rivers, cyanobacteria belonging to the family Leptolyngbyaceae bore > 1 mm deep into limestone pebbles by dissolving carbonate at the tip of their 3-8 μm-thick filaments. The abundance of these borings decreases downward while it is so high at the rock surface that micrometric debris is formed. Moreover, the disintegrated material on the pebbles' surface can be easily removed, for instance, when pebbles are grinding against each other due to wave or current action or when insect larvae settle and scratch loosened grains from the surface while constructing their cases.
