Due to unique optical/mechanical properties and significant resistance to harsh radiation environments, corundum (α-AlO) is considered as a promising candidate material for windows and diagnostics in forthcoming fusion reactors. However, its properties are affected by radiation-induced (predominantly, by fast neutrons) structural defects. In this paper, we analyze thermal stability and recombination kinetics of primary Frenkel defects in anion sublattice - the F-type electronic centers and complementary oxygen interstitials in fast-neutron-irradiated corundum single crystals. Combining precisely measured thermal annealing kinetics for four types of primary radiation defects (neutral and charged Frenkel pairs) and the advanced model of chemical reactions, we have demonstrated for the first time a co-existence of the two types of interstitial defects - neutral O atoms and negatively charged O ions (with attributed optical absorption bands peaked at energies of 6.5 eV and 5.6 eV, respectively). From detailed analysis of interrelated kinetics of four oxygen-related defects, we extracted their diffusion parameters (interstitials serve as mobile recombination partners) required for the future prediction of secondary defect-induced reactions and, eventually, material radiation tolerance.

The degree of exercise-induced oxygen desaturation and outcomes following antifibrotic drug therapy in asymptomatic patients with fibrosing interstitial lung disease (FILD) remain unclear. We compared clinical data, incidence of annual FILD progression, overall survival, and tolerability after initiating nintedanib between 58 patients with dyspnea and 18 patients without. Annual FILD progression was defined as >10% decrease in forced vital capacity (FVC), >15% decrease in diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (D), developing acute exacerbations, or FILD-related death within 1 year of starting nintedanib.

E-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is a potentially severe acute interstitial lung disease primarily observed in the United States, with sporadic cases reported in Europe. EVALI, though rare, could be susceptible to under-diagnosis due to limited awareness and diagnostic suspicion. We present a case of a 19-year-old male in Denmark diagnosed with severe EVALI.

The bi-transition-metal interstitial compounds (BTMICs) are promising for water electrolysis. The previous BTMICs are usually composed of irregular particles. Here, this work shows the synthesis of novel 1D CoMoC-based heterojunction nanowires (1D Co/CoMoC) with diameters about 50 nm and a length-to-diameter ratio about 20 for efficient water electrolysis.

Direct electrochemical detection of miRNA biomarkers in tumor tissue interstitial fluid (TIF) holds great promise for adjuvant therapy for tumors in the perioperative period, yet is limited by background interference and weak signal. Herein, a wash-free and separation-free miRNA biosensor based on photoexcited electro-driven reactive oxygen channeling analysis (LEOCA) is developed to solve the high-fidelity detection in physiological samples. In the presence of miRNA, nanoacceptors (ultrasmall-size polydopamine, uPDA) are responsively assembled on the surface of nanodonors (zirconium metal-organic framework, ZrMOF) to form core-satellite aggregates.

Colloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) have been significantly improved in terms of device performance and lifetime by employing zinc oxide (ZnO) as an electron transport layer (ETL). Although atomic layer deposition (ALD) allows fabrication of uniform, high-quality ZnO films with minimal defects, the high conductivity of ZnO has hindered its straightforward application as an ETL in QD-LEDs. Herein, we propose fabrication of Al-doped ZnMgO (Al:ZnMgO) ETLs for QD-LEDs through a supercycle ALD, with alternating depositions of various metal oxides.
